More than 900,000 people in Austria are currently receiving treatment for psychological issues, and nearly half of them belong to the working-age population. The Austrian Federal Association for Psychotherapy (ÖBVP) has responded by calling for a major expansion of workplace health programs. Since 2009, mental-health-related sick leave has surged by over 20 percent — a trend driven heavily by what experts call digital stress.

Preventologist Markus Kamps warns that constant connectivity is taking a severe toll. Studies indicate that more than 80 percent of Germans check their smartphones at least once every hour. The relentless stimulation leads to concentration problems, emotional irritability, and sleep disorders. Specialists now demand that companies build stronger "regeneration competence" into their cultures.

In response, major industrial players are stepping up. BMW Group, for example, is actively recruiting additional staff for its occupational health management operations at sites in Dingolfing, Munich, Regensburg, and Landshut. New positions are set to be filled starting in early July, with a strong focus on behavioral ergonomics. Responsibilities include analyzing the musculoskeletal system, promoting health-conscious workplace behavior, and designing ergonomic workflows in both production and administrative settings.

Comprehensive workplace health covers more than mental well-being — physical safety and legal compliance are equally vital. A free Health & Safety Toolkit gives UK companies ready-to-use risk assessments, checklists, and toolbox talks to meet regulations such as the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974. Social aspects of workplace health are also gaining ground. The company HAKRO, in partnership with the Weckelweiler Gemeinschaften, is expanding a collaborative program at its logistics center in Schrozberg. A new external work group for people with disabilities is being enlarged, with the aim of embedding inclusion as a permanent element of corporate culture.

Meanwhile, unconventional approaches are spreading. One of them is "neuro-juggling" — led by world-record holder Stephan Ehlers, who conducts workshops in Leipzig, Munich, Hamburg, and Berlin showing how juggling three balls positively influences brain function. Another growing trend is the presence of pets in the office. Research suggests that dogs lower stress levels and strengthen colleague relationships. Ceva Animal Health has already developed guidelines for such programs, complete with clear rules and trial periods.

These internal health initiatives are unfolding against a backdrop of mounting pressure in the automotive sector. Tesla is ramping up hiring in Brandenburg, while Volkswagen faces speculation about possible plant closures — a topic its supervisory board will discuss in July. In this competitive climate, preserving employee health through professional wellness programs is increasingly seen as a decisive long-term advantage. Keeping the workforce healthy is becoming a key differentiator.
