Metaplanet adapts to tighter crypto rules in Japan while investing in stablecoin infrastructure, as Bitcoin rally boosts its holdings and institutional interest grows.

Japan’s corporate crypto landscape is shifting beneath Metaplanet’s feet. The company, long known for its aggressive Bitcoin accumulation strategy, is now navigating a dual transformation: a regulatory overhaul that tightens oversight of digital assets, and a strategic expansion into the infrastructure underpinning Japan’s own digital yen.

The most immediate catalyst for change came from Tokyo on Thursday, when parliament reclassified cryptocurrencies as financial instruments under the stricter Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. The move strips digital assets from the Payments Services Act, imposing new transparency requirements on corporate holders. For Metaplanet, which sits on a vast Bitcoin reserve, this means annual public disclosures of its holdings and a blanket ban on insider trading in digital assets. Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama framed the reform as a consumer protection measure, while also signalling that the government aims to legalise crypto ETFs by 2028 — a potential boon for companies seeking reliable valuation benchmarks for their Bitcoin hoards.

Yet even as the regulatory net tightens, Metaplanet is broadening its footprint. The company has taken a stake in JPYC, the issuer of a yen-pegged stablecoin, participating in a Series B funding round that raised roughly $30 million. Metaplanet’s contribution was part of a $17.6 million tranche that also drew in regional lender Hokuyo Bank. The investment marks a clear departure from Metaplanet’s previous laser focus on direct Bitcoin ownership. By backing JPYC, which runs on Ethereum and other networks, the company is now helping build the rails for Japan’s domestic crypto economy rather than simply hoarding tokens.

The timing of this infrastructure bet coincides with a powerful rally in the underlying asset. Bitcoin breached $78,000 on Thursday, pushing the value of Metaplanet’s more than 1,000 Bitcoin holdings above $60 million at current prices. That rally has attracted heavyweight institutional interest. The Capital Group recently raised its stake to 3.85 million shares, a position worth nearly $9 million.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

But the broader corporate shift is not limited to Metaplanet. ANAP Holdings, which holds roughly 1,400 Bitcoin, has partnered with the HashKey Group to develop institutional Bitcoin lending. According to a Nomura survey, 65% of Japanese institutional investors now hold Bitcoin, signalling that what was once a fringe strategy is becoming mainstream.

On the equity side, Metaplanet’s stock has not fully reflected the crypto tailwinds. Shares slipped about 3.5% in recent trading to 333 yen, even as Bitcoin held steady near $76,000. Analysts attribute the decline to profit-taking after an extended rally, noting that the company booked a non-cash impairment charge of nearly $680 million last fiscal year due to the volatility of its massive holdings.

The company’s ambition remains outsized. Management aims to expand its crypto reserve to 210,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2027 — roughly 1% of the total global supply. To fund that goal, Metaplanet is courting American capital by waiving issuance fees on its US depositary receipts through mid-June, with Deutsche Bank acting as custodian. The fee waiver is designed to attract US investors already familiar with Bitcoin as a reserve asset.

Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Technically, market participants are watching the $78,333 level as a key resistance point. A sustained breakout above that threshold could open the path toward $84,000, with profit-taking expected only in the zone above $83,000. The rising number of open futures contracts lends support to that bullish scenario, even as Metaplanet’s own stock faces near-term headwinds from regulatory recalibration and the lingering scars of past write-downs.
