Metaplanet's Discount Paradox: A $2.8 Billion Bitcoin Hoard That Trades at a Loss

Metaplanet holds 43,000 Bitcoin, making it the third-largest publicly traded corporate holder of the cryptocurrency globally, trailing only Strategy and Twenty One Capital. That stash is worth roughly $2.8 billion. Yet the company's stock closed Friday at €1.19, down 3.58% on the day and off 46.55% since the start of the year.

The disconnect stems from a metric many retail investors overlook: the mNAV, or the ratio of market capitalization to net asset value in Bitcoin. At Metaplanet, that figure sits below 1.0, meaning the equity trades at a discount to the raw value of the coins on its balance sheet. Investors are effectively paying less than a euro for every euro's worth of Bitcoin the company holds — the opposite of the premium that Bitcoin treasury stocks typically command.

From Hotel Operator to Financial Platform

Metaplanet began life as a hotel operator but has since transformed into a pure-play Bitcoin treasury vehicle. The next phase of that evolution is more ambitious: the company wants to distribute financial products, not just hoard coins.

To that end, it acquired the securities broker Siiibo Securities for roughly $13.1 million. The unit was rebranded as Metaplanet Securities on July 13, 2026, and came with a coveted Category I financial instruments license in Japan. That regulatory approval unlocks two new product lines: preferred share series dubbed "MARS" and "Mercury," both designed to offer yield-bearing exposure to Bitcoin's performance without requiring investors to hold the cryptocurrency directly.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

The broader strategy, code-named "Project Nova," involves building tokenized credit products backed by Bitcoin collateral, developed in partnership with JPYC and Progmat. CEO Simon Gerovich has framed Bitcoin not merely as a store of value but as the foundation for a dynamic, round-the-clock lending system aimed at filling a gap in Japan's credit market for mid-sized companies.

Book Losses Mask Operating Progress

Metaplanet reported an ordinary loss of roughly $728 million for the first quarter of 2026. That figure, however, is entirely a book loss driven by Bitcoin's 24% price decline during the period — not a cash flow problem.

Strip out that mark-to-market effect, and a different picture emerges. The company's Bitcoin Income Business generated about $19.8 million in revenue in the first quarter, with operating profit of ¥2.27 billion, or $14.38 million. A Bitcoin yield of 2.8% suggests the model can actually produce cash flow, provided treasury management holds up.

To fund further expansion, Metaplanet has issued zero-coupon convertible bonds worth $50 million, structured with an automatic repayment mechanism that functions like a revolving credit line for additional Bitcoin purchases. A separate agreement with the EVO Fund provides access to up to $59.5 million through zero-coupon convertible bonds and stock subscription rights, with proceeds earmarked for both Bitcoin acquisitions and launching the new securities business.

Big Money Moves In

Institutional investors appear to be betting on the strategy despite the stock's slide. Capital Research and Management, part of the Capital Group, disclosed a 10.63% voting rights stake in Metaplanet on July 21, 2026, representing more than 136 million shares. That makes the U.S. asset manager the company's largest shareholder.

Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The ambitions remain audacious: 100,000 Bitcoin by the end of 2026, and 210,000 by 2027 — more than double the current hoard. That kind of target has made Metaplanet one of the most heavily shorted stocks on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, with institutional skepticism clashing against management's conviction.

Waiting for a Catalyst

Technically, the stock sits 14.48% above its 52-week low of €1.04, hit in late June, but more than 40% below its 200-day moving average of €2.05. The relative strength index of 44.4 signals neutral territory — neither overbought nor oversold, just drifting without direction.

The critical question for the weeks ahead is when MARS and Mercury officially launch. A successful debut of those preferred shares is widely seen as the lever that could close the gap between the stock price and the Bitcoin stash. Until then, Metaplanet's equity remains tethered to Bitcoin's own price movements — and Project Nova remains a promise that has yet to prove it can outweigh the book losses of the present.
