Metaplanet's High-Stakes Pivot: From Bitcoin Hoarder to Regulated Yield Provider — Can Japan's Savers Buy In?

Metaplanet plans to use its 40,000 Bitcoin holdings as collateral for regulated yield products targeting Japan's $7.4 trillion in idle savings, pending Siiibo Securities acquisition.

The numbers are stark. Metaplanet sits on roughly 40,000 Bitcoin acquired at an average cost of $98,000 per coin, while the asset trades well below $70,000 — a paper loss that would cripple most corporate balance sheets. Yet instead of retreating, the Japanese firm is doubling down with a radical strategic twist: it wants to turn its underwater crypto stash into the collateral for a regulated lending business aimed squarely at the country’s famously risk-averse savers.

The vehicle for this transformation is the planned acquisition of Siiibo Securities for about $13 million (¥2.1 billion), a deal set to close by mid-July 2026. What Metaplanet is really buying is a Type-I financial instruments license — the regulatory key that unlocks the ability to issue Bitcoin-backed bonds in Japan. Without it, the entire exercise would be dead on arrival. The integration is scheduled for completion by end of August, after which Siiibo will be rebranded as Metaplanet Securities.

Internally code-named “Project Nova,” the initiative aims to offer retail investors yield products paying between 6% and 12% annually, secured by the company’s existing Bitcoin holdings. The target market is enormous: Japanese households collectively hold roughly $7.4 trillion in cash and low-yielding deposits — a mountain of idle capital that has generated negligible returns for decades. Metaplanet is betting that a regulated wrapper can convince conservative savers to dip into the volatile crypto market.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

The stock market has responded with a mix of initial euphoria and subsequent profit-taking. Shares jumped into double-digit gains on Monday but eased back Tuesday to around €1.41, leaving a weekly advance of roughly 11%. The longer-term picture, however, is punishing. The stock has shed nearly 37% since the start of the year and trades more than 87% below its 52-week high of €11.40 set in June 2025. The 200-day moving average stands at €2.49, meaning the current price is deeply oversold by any conventional measure. The relative strength index sits at 46, neither overbought nor oversold, suggesting the market is in a consolidation phase — waiting to see whether “Nova” is a credible plan or just an ambitious slide deck.

Metaplanet is not operating in a vacuum. The global trend of monetizing Bitcoin holdings through yield products is accelerating. BlackRock today launched its iShares Bitcoin Premium Income ETF (BITA) on the Nasdaq, targeting annual returns of 15% to 25% via derivative strategies. And Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy) added another 1,587 Bitcoin to its coffers in early June, paying roughly $100 million. The institutional appetite for Bitcoin as a yield-generating base asset is real — and Metaplanet is trying to replicate that model in a far more regulated environment.

The real test will come after the Siiibo deal closes. Metaplanet must then secure regulatory approval for its first Nova products, prove that Japanese retail investors are willing to entrust their savings to Bitcoin-backed instruments, and overcome what is simultaneously a distribution challenge, a trust deficit, and a regulatory hurdle. The stock’s annualized 30-day volatility of 62% underscores how nervous the market remains. For now, Metaplanet’s shares are a wager on a promise — one that will only begin to be validated when the new securities subsidiary starts operating in earnest later next year.
