Investors are grappling with a stark contradiction at Metaplanet. The Japanese company’s core business is firing on all cylinders — revenue surged 251% to 3.08 billion yen in the first quarter of 2026 and operating profit nearly tripled — yet the bottom line shows a net loss of 114.5 billion yen ($725 million). The culprit lies not in any cash drain but in Japan’s rigid accounting rules, which force the firm to mark its vast Bitcoin hoard to market every quarter. Unrealized valuation losses of 116.4 billion yen swallowed the operating gains whole.

That accounting hit has spooked the market. For the first time since Metaplanet pivoted to a Bitcoin-centric strategy, its shares are trading below the modified net asset value (mNAV). At 328 yen in Tokyo and $2.23 on the US over-the-counter market, the company is effectively valued at less than the sum of its underlying crypto assets. It is a milestone that underscores how deeply the current macro environment — US 10-year yields above 4.5%, a Fed funds rate stuck at 3.5%–3.75%, and a 30% probability of another rate hike — is weighing on digital-asset plays.

Bitcoin itself has slid to around $78,200, well below the technical resistance zone of $82,000 that analysts say needs to be reclaimed to revive sentiment. The broader pain is visible across the crypto ecosystem: US spot Bitcoin ETFs suffered net outflows of over $1 billion in a single week, with BlackRock’s product bleeding $136 million near the weekend. Even institutional custodians are feeling the squeeze — BitGo reported a first-quarter loss of nearly $61 million, almost entirely attributable to valuation adjustments.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?

Against that backdrop, Metaplanet’s management is insisting the paper losses are irrelevant to the long-term hold strategy. The underlying business, they argue, is humming. The company generated roughly 2.5 billion yen purely from selling Bitcoin option premiums in the first quarter, a side business that contributed meaningfully to the revenue explosion. For the full year, the board forecasts revenue of 16 billion yen and an operating profit of 11.4 billion yen.

The balance sheet still bulges with 40,177 Bitcoin, worth about 514 billion yen at current prices. To keep building that war chest, Metaplanet raised 52 billion yen in the first quarter through a mix of new shares, subscription rights, and special warrants placed in February and March. But the financing strategy is evolving. Going forward, management says it will stop issuing common stock if the company’s market capitalization falls below its net Bitcoin asset value — a direct response to the dilution that has long irked existing shareholders. If that ratio dips under 1.0, the company will pivot to rights offerings instead, a toolkit designed to keep it nimble even in a bear market.

The wildcard remains whether Bitcoin can stabilize and eventually recover. The recent price slide has prompted speculation that other large holders may join the selling. Reports suggest Strategy — the firm formerly known as MicroStrategy — is considering offloading part of its Bitcoin stash to fund a multibillion-dollar debt buyback and dividend payments. If that materialises, it could trigger a broader liquidation trend among corporate crypto treasuries, adding further pressure on Metaplanet’s stock and its mNAV discount. For now, the company’s fate is tightly tied to reclaiming that $82,000 resistance line.
