Metaplanet's Revenue Jumps 251% but Bitcoin Write-Down Swamps Bottom Line — Shareholder Lottery Aims to Stem Exodus

Metaplanet reported a blistering 251% revenue surge for the first quarter of fiscal 2026, propelled by lucrative Bitcoin derivatives trading. Sales hit roughly $19.5 million, and operating profit also climbed sharply. Yet beneath the top-line strength lies a staggering net loss of $725 million — a non-cash charge stemming from mark-to-market write-downs on the company's massive cryptocurrency hoard. Bitcoin lost nearly a quarter of its value during the quarter, dragging the bottom line into the red.
The Japanese firm, Asia’s largest publicly traded Bitcoin holder with 40,177 BTC on its balance sheet, has seen its stock price hammered. Shares trade at €1.20, barely two percent above the 52-week low of €1.18 reached earlier this week. The equity has shed nearly half its value since the start of the year and has plunged 87% over the past twelve months. Annualized volatility remains extreme at over 62%, underscoring the speculative nature of the stock.
Compounding the pressure, Metaplanet was ejected from the S&P Japan Mid Cap 100 Index on June 22, a move by S&P Dow Jones Indices that further dents institutional demand. The index exclusion followed the stock's dramatic slide and could accelerate selling by passive funds.
In an attempt to shore up retail interest, Metaplanet has teamed up with the crypto exchange Coincheck to launch a Bitcoin lottery for shareholders. The company is giving away a total of 20 million yen in Bitcoin — five grand prizes of 100,000 yen in BTC each and 1,500 smaller prizes of 10,000 yen. Investors who hold at least 100 shares by the record date in June 2026 are eligible. The initiative is part of what management calls a "Bitcoin-first" marketing strategy aimed at individual investors.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Metaplanet?
Despite the index ouster, the lottery program appears to be resonating with retail. At SBI Securities, Metaplanet ranks as the 14th most popular stock among shareholder perk programs, rubbing shoulders with blue chips like Toyota and Sony.
On the technical front, the relative strength index has dipped into oversold territory, with recent readings of 32.6 and 32.9. The 200-day moving average sits at €2.36 — far above the current price. Neither metric alone signals a clear reversal.
Metaplanet is also forging ahead with a longer-term strategic pivot. The company plans to complete its acquisition of broker Siiibo Securities by July, renaming the unit Metaplanet Securities. The new subsidiary is intended to launch proprietary crypto financial products in Japan, giving the firm a direct distribution channel.
Metaplanet at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For now, the dual narrative of robust operational performance and punishing Bitcoin volatility leaves investors grappling with a stock that is tightly shackled to crypto’s swings. Whether a Bitcoin lottery and a brokerage acquisition can turn the tide remains an open question — with the next key milestone being the June record date for shareholder rewards.
