Nebius's Growth Story Meets Its Toughest Test: Can a $27 Billion Customer Be Trusted?

Nebius shares fell 8% on Meta cloud rumors, but long-term rally remains. With 59% backlog tied to Meta, concentration risk and extreme valuation (P/E 96) challenge the AI infrastructure firm's outlook.

Nebius Stock Risk: Meta and Microsoft Dominate $46B Backlog, Valuation at 96 P/E

The arithmetic behind Nebius’s ascent is as simple as it is unnerving. The AI infrastructure provider has amassed a $46 billion order backlog, but 27 billion of those dollars come from a single client: Meta Platforms. Another 17 billion belongs to Microsoft. When reports surfaced on July 1 that Meta is developing its own internal cloud project, dubbed “Meta Compute,” the market did the math and didn’t like the result. Nebius shares slid 8.32% on the week to close at €194.00, dragging the stock more than 25% below its June 22 record high of €261.00.

Even so, the selloff barely dented a staggering longer-term rally. Nebius has surged 153.59% since the start of the year and 353.27% over the past twelve months. The weekly retreat looks more like a scratch than a fracture — until you consider the concentration risk. Meta is far more than a customer; it accounts for nearly 59% of Nebius’s entire backlog. If that anchor client begins marketing its own spare compute capacity, the competitive dynamics for the entire “neocloud” sector shift overnight.

That question is now the central drama for the company. For now, the operational picture remains compelling. Nebius reported first-quarter 2026 revenue of $399 million, up 684% year over year. Its adjusted EBITDA margin for the AI business hit 45%, and management targets around 40% for the full year. The company has also dramatically raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $20–$25 billion, citing “secured customer contracts” for additional capacity. That is a statement of confidence, not defense.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nebius?

Yet the market’s skepticism is not unfounded. Analysts point to Nebius’s extreme valuation: the stock trades at a price-to-earnings ratio above 96, compared with a software industry average of roughly 27. The annualized 30-day volatility stands at more than 105%, leaving no margin for error. The company’s capital-intensive model requires stable prices over long horizons, and any disruption from Meta could compress margins quickly.

Nebius is not waiting passively. On June 24 it unveiled an update to its AI Cloud 3.6 platform, giving developers better tools for production workloads. Earlier in the month it completed the acquisition of Eigen AI to strengthen its inference and model optimization capabilities. Both moves aim to broaden the customer base beyond the hyperscaler giants.

The next inflection point arrives July 8–9, when Nebius’s management is scheduled to present new solutions at a major industry summit. The event is explicitly designed to attract clients outside the hyperscaler orbit. If the offering convinces investors that the company can reduce its dependency on Meta, the current support near the 50-day moving average of €190.42 — just 1.88% below Friday’s close — could hold. If not, the next floor sits at the 100-day average of €144.92.

The bull case rests on the backlog’s contractual certainty and the sheer momentum of AI infrastructure demand. The bear case warns that Meta’s ambitions, if realized, could hollow out Nebius’s core revenue stream. The cash-flow gap between liquid reserves and planned expansions also remains a concern. What happens on July 8 and 9 will go a long way toward determining whether Nebius is a diversified platform in the making or merely a server landlord for Mark Zuckerberg.
