Mannheim’s Oberbürgermeister Christian Specht says he was taken by surprise when Germany’s second-oldest brewery, Eichbaum, announced it would shut its doors for good. The last 240 workers have all received their termination notices, marking the end of a 347-year brewing tradition that the company’s own boss described as the “darkest hour” in its history.

Months of restructuring and a last-ditch search for a buyer came to nothing. The brewery had been running at a loss, unable to repay its debts or secure the liquidity needed to keep going. A rescue plan that creditors approved back in March had included the sale of the “Karamalz” brand rights to Veltins, and management had been in talks with Park & Bellheimer and Lafayette. But none of those efforts proved sufficient to reverse the downward spiral. The collapse of Eichbaum’s export business and a shrinking domestic market had left the company too damaged to attract fresh capital.

The union Nahrung-Genuss-Gaststätten (NGG) has sharply criticised the lack of transparency from management. According to the NGG, a different approach could have saved roughly 100 of the jobs now lost. “The leadership kept employees in the dark,” a union representative said. Plans to set up a transfer company for about 30 workers fell through because the money simply wasn’t there. The union is now demanding a swift social plan to cushion the blow.

Specht, the city’s mayor, said that to his knowledge viable offers for a continuation had still been on the table just days before the shutdown. His statement contrasts with the official line from the company, which insisted no investor could be found.

The brewery’s decline unfolded over nearly a year, as the timeline shows:

  • October 2025: Self-administration proceedings filed
  • January 2026: Insolvency case formally opened
  • March 2026: Creditors approved the restructuring plan
  • July 2026: Investor hunt definitively shelved

Brewing will not stop immediately. Production is slated to run through the end of September. After that, the company’s assets will be liquidated. There is already interest in the brewery site in Mannheim—the local university clinic is among the potential buyers. The Eichbaum brand itself will be put up for sale, though for the current employees that offers little comfort.

The NGG’s anger is matched by the shock of the workforce. Betriebsrat (works council) members confirmed that every single one of the 240 remaining staff has received a dismissal letter. For a brewery that survived more than three centuries of wars, economic crises, and changing tastes, the end came not with a bang but with a letter in the mail.
