Nokia’s transformation is gathering pace on two fronts. A UK appellate court has swept aside patent lawsuits from Acer and Asus, while the Finnish network equipment maker pushes deeper into artificial intelligence with a targeted divestiture of legacy hardware.

The Court of Appeal ruled on Tuesday, 12 May 2026, that Nokia’s offer to settle licensing terms through independent arbitration under FRAND conditions was sufficient, blocking the Taiwanese PC makers’ attempt to force a court?imposed interim licence. The decision cancels a trial scheduled for June and July, reducing legal costs and uncertainty. The dispute had also spawned litigation in the US, Germany, India and Brazil, making the outcome a critical validation of Nokia’s licensing model.

“This strengthens the credibility of a business that has long been a high?margin pillar for the group,” said one London?based telecoms analyst. The ruling follows a multi?year patent agreement with Hisense announced on 8 January 2026, suggesting Nokia is building a run of favourable resolutions.

Investors have already priced in much of the optimism. Nokia shares closed at €11.21 on Tuesday, marking a 101.42% gain since the start of the year and a 142.12% surge over twelve months. On Wednesday the stock edged up a further 2.9% to €11.54. Yet the rally has stretched the shares roughly 36% above their 50?day moving average, with the relative strength index at 61 — elevated but not yet in overbought territory.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?

Strategic Portfolio Shuffle

While the legal front clears, Nokia is reshaping its portfolio with surgical precision. The company has agreed to sell its entire Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) customer?premises equipment business to US?based Inseego for approximately $20 million in stock and warrants. Following a subsequent investment, Nokia’s stake in Inseego will stand at about 11%. The deal is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026.

For Inseego, the acquisition is transformative — the unit generates roughly $200 million in annualised revenue, nearly doubling the US firm’s top line. For Nokia, it’s a deliberate exit from a segment that had been relegated to its “Portfolio Businesses” category, which includes site implementation, microwave radio and enterprise campus edge. That unit as a whole booked €850 million in revenue and an operating loss of €90 million.

“We needed to secure continuity for the business and its customers without tying up more capital and management attention,” explained Nokia corporate development chief Konstanty Owczarek, who described Inseego as the right strategic partner.

Betting Big on AI?Driven Networks

The opposite end of Nokia’s strategy is a rapid ramp?up in artificial intelligence. The company is embedding agentic AI into its fixed?network platforms Altiplano, Corteca and Broadband Easy, drawing on experience from more than 600 million broadband connections already deployed.

Nokia has set specific targets for these AI agents: first?contact resolution rates above 50% in helpdesk operations, network incident qualification within five minutes, and a 50% reduction in repeat site visits for construction and connected households. Computer?vision applications will inspect installation quality and create digital twins of fibre connections, while automatic diagnostics aim to detect network degradation before outages occur.

Industry research backs the direction. A recent Omdia survey found 48% of communication service providers see the most immediate benefit of agentic AI in customer experience, though network management is considered the most important long?term use case. Nokia is positioning squarely in that sweet spot. The broader market for agentic AI in telecom networks is expected to reach $6.2 billion by 2030.

Analyst Nods and Next Milestones

The twin moves have drawn analyst upgrades. Argus raised Nokia from Hold to Buy with a $15 price target, citing stronger AI demand and higher revenue growth expectations for network infrastructure in 2026. Morgan Stanley lifted its target from €8.50 to €11, keeping an Overweight rating.

The next major test comes on 19 May 2026, when CEO Justin Hotard and head of investor relations David Mulholland appear at the J.P. Morgan conference in Boston. The fireside chat and one?on?one meetings are expected to focus on Nokia’s more commercially oriented strategy, the expansion of 5G solutions for the defence sector, and the integration of Infinera.

First?quarter 2026 results already offered a solid foundation: comparable net sales of €4.5 billion, an operating margin of 6.2% and free cash flow of €629 million. Now the company must convert its sharper legal position and streamlined portfolio into visible progress in orders, margins and network?infrastructure growth. The market has built plenty of trust into the share price; the next leg of the re?rating will depend on execution.
