Nokia's NestAI Defense Deal Delivers One-Day Surge Before Volatility Resumes as Investors Eye Q2 Earnings

The announcement of a deepened artificial intelligence partnership for military applications sent Nokia shares surging 8.7 percent on Thursday, only for the bulk of those gains to vanish by Friday's close. The whipsaw movement underscores the extreme volatility that has come to define the Finnish network equipment maker's stock in 2026, even as its long-term strategic transformation gains traction.
Nokia Defense and the European AI laboratory NestAI unveiled three new operational capabilities on July 9, building on a €100 million joint investment from Nokia and the Finnish state fund Tesi that was announced in November 2025. The collaboration focuses on providing secure communications, sensor fusion and mission-planning tools for modern armed forces operating in environments where traditional infrastructure is compromised or destroyed.
Three core functions form the backbone of the partnership. Nokia's deployable 5G technology is being integrated with NestOS, NestAI's adaptive battlefield operating system, to ensure command and control even when fixed infrastructure is absent. Nokia's radio network planning models are feeding into NestOS's mission-planning tools, allowing troops to anticipate connectivity gaps during rapid operations. A third component combines Nokia's integrated sensing and communications technology with NestAI's multi-sensor tracking, aiming to deliver faster threat detection under degraded conditions.
The solutions are being developed entirely in Europe and tailored to NATO requirements, a point both Mikko Hautala, Nokia Defense's chairman, and NestAI founder Peter Sarlin emphasized in their statements. The deal forms part of a broader defense push: Nokia has also joined a Finnish border guard consortium developing integrated drone-defence systems for patrol vehicles and ships.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?
But the market response was short-lived. After Thursday's sharp rally, the stock gave up 3.40 percent on Friday to close at €10.96. Analysts attribute the pullback to profit-taking rather than a shift in investor sentiment toward the company, noting that Nokia lagged European peers and its rival Ericsson's ADRs on a day when the broader European ADR index rose.
The week's net result left the equity down 1.84 percent, and over 30 days it has shed 5.56 percent. The gap to the 52-week high of €14.97, set on June 3, has widened to roughly 27 percent. Technically, the stock sits 9.42 percent below its 50-day moving average of €12.09 and has seen its shorter-term 20-day average slip under the 50-day line — a bearish signal. The relative strength index at 44.8 indicates neutral territory, neither overbought nor oversold.
Yet the long-term picture remains striking. Nokia's shares have more than doubled year to date with a gain of 96.75 percent, and they are up 152.42 percent over the past 12 months. Compared with the 52-week low of €3.45 reached in August 2025, the recovery exceeds 200 percent. The stock continues to trade 44.57 percent above its 200-day average of €7.58, keeping the structural uptrend intact.
Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Annualised 30-day volatility of 72.36 percent warns that sharp swings are likely to persist. At a market capitalisation of €62.52 billion, Nokia remains a stock where fast directional changes are the norm rather than the exception.
Investor attention now shifts to July 23, when Nokia reports second-quarter results. Analysts expect earnings per share of 7 US cents — up from 4 cents a year earlier — on revenue of $5.59 billion, compared with $5.15 billion in the prior-year period. Until those numbers land, the NestAI deal will continue to symbolise Nokia's push to diversify beyond its core telecom-equipment business, even as the market's short-term patience remains tested by the stock's relentless volatility.
