Novo Nordisk's Clinical Edge and US Push Battle a Steep Share Decline

Novo Nordisk posts strong clinical data and expands Wegovy, yet shares are down 22% YTD. Can its May 6th earnings report resolve the contradiction?

Novo Nordisk shares are caught in a stark contradiction. While the Danish pharmaceutical giant secures clinical victories and expands its commercial reach, its stock price continues to languish deep in negative territory for the year. This divergence sets the stage for a critical first-quarter earnings report in May.

The company is sharpening its competitive edge against rival Eli Lilly with new data. A recent observational study involving approximately 8,000 patients provides a key differentiator for its semaglutide-based treatments. The data indicates that only 6.7 percent of semaglutide patients lost a disproportionate amount of muscle tissue, compared to 10.3 percent of those on Lilly's tirzepatide. This stronger muscle preservation profile offers a potent marketing advantage in the lucrative obesity drug market.

Commercial expansion is progressing on multiple fronts. In Europe, regulatory approvals are streamlining operations. The UK health authority has greenlit a new, higher-dose Wegovy pen to aid long-term therapy. Furthermore, the European Union has granted permission for Wegovy to be transported under temperature control for up to 48 hours, a logistical enhancement for broader supply chain distribution.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

The offensive is particularly aggressive in the crucial United States market. The high-dose 7.2 mg Wegovy HD injection is now available for self-payers via the GoodRx platform at a transparent price of $399 per month, or $1,197 for a three-month supply. This move aims to retain patients whose weight loss has plateaued on standard doses. Simultaneously, Novo Nordisk is pushing its oral Wegovy pill, introduced in January, to recapture market share. Presented at a conference in San Diego, results from the ORION study showed the 25 mg tablet achieved significantly greater weight loss than Lilly's competing Foundayo pill, with a better gastrointestinal tolerability profile. A separate survey found 84 percent of patients preferred the Novo Nordisk pill's attributes.

Despite these operational strides, investor sentiment remains bleak. The stock currently trades around €34.80, reflecting a year-to-date loss of nearly 22 percent. The share price now sits more than 50 percent below its 52-week high above €70. A Relative Strength Index (RSI) reading of 25 points to a severely oversold condition.

Management is deploying financial tools to counter the slide. A share buyback program launched in February, with a total volume of up to 15 billion Danish kroner, is underway. By mid-April, the company had already spent roughly 2.8 billion kroner repurchasing its own shares. In a strategic move beyond financial engineering, Novo Nordisk has also announced a partnership with OpenAI to leverage artificial intelligence in accelerating drug discovery and manufacturing processes.

All eyes now turn to the upcoming quarterly results on May 6th. The report will deliver crucial evidence on whether the early prescription trends for the oral Wegovy pill and the launch of the HD version can begin to offset persistent pricing pressures and translate operational momentum into financial performance that finally resonates with the market.
