OHB’s Support Expires Just as the 200-Day Moving Average Beckons

OHB's post-capital increase stabilization ends, leaving shares near key 200-day moving average as political support and strong backlog offer long-term promise.

The stabilisation period that has propped up OHB’s stock since late June ended on Friday, leaving the Bremen-based space and defence group to face the market without a safety net for the first time since its capital increase. The timing could hardly be more precarious: the shares are hovering barely a euro above their 200-day moving average, a level that technical traders view as the last line of defence for the long-term uptrend.

J.P. Morgan coordinated the stabilisation effort that began on 24 June, immediately after OHB placed 1,702,480 new shares across two tranches to fund its expansion in satellite manufacturing and launch infrastructure. The bank’s role was to absorb excessive price swings during the post-offering period, a cushion that has now been removed. In pre-market trading on Monday, the stock showed some resilience, edging up 1.04 percent to €242.50, but whether that holds will depend on whether the shares can defend the 200-day line at €241.40.

The current price sits just 1.10 euros above that threshold, a dangerously narrow buffer for a stock that has already shed 11.66 percent over the past month. The subscription price of €300.00 for the new shares looms as a psychological overhang — the market is now trading well below that level, a dynamic that has kept sellers active. The relative strength index at 34.4 suggests the stock is approaching oversold territory, which some technicians interpret as a potential signal that a floor could form precisely at the moving average.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

The short-term weakness obscures a more robust long-term picture. OHB raised gross proceeds of roughly €484 million from the capital increase, earmarked for industrialising satellite production and expanding launch capacity. The free float is expected to rise above 20 percent as planned. The company’s record order backlog of approximately €3.35 billion will face its next test on 6 August, when second-quarter results are due. Investors will be watching closely to see whether that pipeline is translating into profitable growth.

Political support has been building alongside the financial manoeuvring. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius visited OHB in Bremen on 14 July as part of his summer tour, where he discussed the possibility of a Bundeswehr-owned launch site with CEO Marco Fuchs. OHB’s subsidiary European Spaceport Company is developing both maritime and land-based launch platforms, and managing director Sabine von der Recke welcomed the minister’s interest, noting that military requirements demand greater resilience in launch capacity. Fuchs confirmed that work on the offshore spaceport concept continues, with the geographic focus having expanded well beyond the original North Sea plans as demand for satellites and launch slots has surged.

Yet the stock has so far shrugged off this political tailwind. Friday’s close at €240.00 represented a 0.41 percent decline on the day, extending the 30-day slide to 12.57 percent. The gap from the 52-week high of €688.00, reached in May, now stands at 65.12 percent. The RSI reading of 33.2 from the secondary article reinforces the oversold signal, though such technical indicators offer no guarantees of a reversal.

On an annual basis, the performance remains striking: a gain of 235.20 percent from the prior-year level. That disconnect between the long-term trajectory and the recent selloff defines the current tension in the stock. For now, all eyes are on whether the 200-day moving average can hold until the quarterly numbers arrive — and whether political signals translate into actual contracts. The stabilisation period is over, and OHB must prove its mettle alone.
