Palantir’s Paradox: Record Revenue Growth Collides with European Sovereignty Storm

Palantir's stellar Q1 2026 results with 85% revenue growth fail to lift stock as European governments abandon its platforms, driving shares to near 52-week lows amid short-seller pressure.

Palantir Stock Plunges 34% Despite 85% Revenue Surge: European Headwinds Bite

The numbers are spectacular, yet the share price keeps sinking. Palantir posted a 85% revenue surge to $1.63 billion in the first quarter of 2026, easily beating market expectations, while its US commercial business exploded 104% higher. The company is debt-free, sitting on $2.29 billion in cash, with gross margins of 84% and free-cash-flow margins of 51%. But none of that has stopped the stock from tumbling 34% since the start of the year to around €95, just a whisker above its 52-week low of €93.30. The chasm between operational brilliance and market sentiment has rarely been wider.

Europe’s digital sovereignty push is the chief culprit. France’s domestic intelligence service DGSI has abandoned Palantir for local rival ChapsVision, a direct hit to the company’s government contracts. The threat is spreading: in the UK, Sheffield City Council is blocking new NHS deals over patient-data concerns, putting a key £480 million contract at risk when an exit clause kicks in next February. These setbacks are not isolated incidents – they reflect a broader geopolitical shift as European governments increasingly shun US platforms for sensitive infrastructure. Analysts at Wolfe Research still call Palantir the best-positioned AI vendor in the market, but the erosion of its European foothold is a structural headwind that no amount of US commercial growth can instantly fix.

Bulls argue the selloff is wildly overdone. The consensus analyst price target stands at roughly €161, implying more than 70% upside from current levels. The relative strength index (RSI) at 28.4 signals deeply oversold conditions, and the PEG ratio of 0.39 suggests the valuation is not as stretched as the headline numbers imply. The company’s $7.65 billion annual revenue guidance, recently raised, adds further fuel. If Palantir delivers a strong second-quarter report in early August, the “sandcastle” narrative pushed by bearish heavyweight Michael Burry could crumble.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

Bears, however, are not convinced. Even after the rout, Palantir trades at 77 times expected earnings – nearly triple the sector median of 24. Burry, famed for his “Big Short” bet, has piled into a short position, calling the stock a fragile sandcastle. The PEG ratio may look low, but that is only because earnings are growing so fast; critics say the absolute P/E multiple still leaves no room for error. Any stumble in the US commercial engine – which accounts for the vast majority of growth – could trigger another brutal leg down. New AI rivals like Anthropic are also crowding the enterprise space, heaping pressure on Palantir to sustain its 104% US momentum.

Technically, the stock is at a knife-edge. Holding above the €93.30 52-week low could set the stage for a bounce, but a break below that level would target the psychologically important $100 mark. To confirm a trend reversal, Palantir needs to reclaim its 50-day moving average at €116.94 – a nearly 23% climb from here. The gap to the 200-day line is a staggering 31%, underscoring how far sentiment has detached from fundamentals. The next catalyst arrives in early August with the Q2 print. If the company can prove its European troubles are contained and that US commercial growth remains explosive, the bear thesis may lose its foundation. If not, the exodus will only accelerate.
