Rocket Lab investors had plenty to digest this week. A last-minute weather scrub forced the company to abort the launch of a Japanese Earth-observation satellite just as ground crews were loading liquid oxygen into the Electron rocket. Yet the stock finished the session 5% higher, hitting €93.60 on Wednesday — a sign that the market’s attention was fixed on something far bigger than a single delayed mission.

That something is Rocket Lab’s stunning $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications. Under the deal, Rocket Lab will pay $54 per Iridium share — a 24.1% premium to the unadjusted price — with Iridium shareholders receiving half in cash and half in Rocket Lab stock. A collar mechanism between $67.50 and $112.50 hedges against share-price swings. Both boards have unanimously approved the transaction, and the closing is targeted for mid-2027, pending regulatory green lights.

The purchase instantly transforms Rocket Lab from a launch-services provider into a vertically integrated space company. It gains Iridium’s 66 active low-Earth-orbit satellites and its prized L-band spectrum — assets that CEO Peter Beck called “a shortcut into the space applications market” and a “pivotal moment for the entire space industry.” Iridium generated $871.7 million in revenue last year with an operating EBITDA of $495 million, a 57% margin. According to Bank of America analysts, the addition could roughly double Rocket Lab’s revenue and push the combined entity into positive EBITDA territory. Rocket Lab’s own backlog already topped $2.2 billion before the announcement.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?

To finance the cash portion and assume roughly $2.1 billion of Iridium’s debt, Rocket Lab secured a $3.6 billion bridge loan from Deutsche Bank and Wells Fargo with a 364-day maturity. The company’s heavy lifting on the factory floor continues unabated: a new Electron rocket rolls off the production line roughly every 11 days. At the same time, management is pushing ahead with the larger Neutron rocket, whose first flight is targeted no earlier than the fourth quarter of 2026. If that timeline holds, Neutron will be airborne well before the Iridium acquisition closes.

Wall Street analysts are largely upbeat. Needham’s Ryan Koontz maintained his $120 price target, pointing to immediate free-cash-flow benefits and margin expansion. Craig-Hallum’s Jeff Van Rhee lifted his target to $120 from $98, while Roth MKM sees the stock hitting $130. Technically, the shares trade about 36% above their 200-day moving average of €65.65, although the stock has slipped 15% over the past 30 days. The RSI sits at a neutral 49, and annualized volatility stands at 108% — a reminder of how sharply Rocket Lab can swing on news.

In the near term, Rocket Lab will try again to launch the QPS-SAR-13 satellite for Japan’s QPS Institute. Backup windows are already in place, and the satellite remains ready on the pad. For long-term holders, the weekly gain of 24% and the tripling of the stock since last summer offer a broader picture that transcends any single weather delay. The Iridium deal, if completed, rewrites Rocket Lab’s story entirely.
