SAP's AI Ambition Faces a Double Squeeze: Internal Austerity and External Shocks Drive Shares Lower

SAP finds itself caught between two powerful forces. The software giant is slashing internal spending to fund its transformation into an artificial-intelligence powerhouse, even as a deteriorating geopolitical backdrop and a broad pullback in technology stocks repeatedly batter its share price. The result is a stock that has shed nearly half its value from a 52-week high and now trades near levels that are testing investor patience.
The most recent session laid the conflict bare. SAP shares dropped 3.3% to close at €137.24, deepening a slide that accelerated after attacks on tankers in the Middle East pushed the DAX below the 25,000-point mark. A simultaneous softening in the previously red-hot AI sector compounded the pain, leaving the stock down 2.95% on the week and 11.05% over the past month. Year to date, the decline stands at 31.60%. At its 52-week peak of €266.00, set on July 9, 2025, the shares are now off by 48.06%, with the gap to the 52-week low of €130.80 (marked on June 25, 2026) shrinking to just 5.63%.
To navigate this turbulence, management has turned to aggressive belt-tightening. Internal documents dated July 8 reveal a near-total hiring freeze: new recruits will be approved almost exclusively for critical AI roles. The company has also eliminated internal business travel that lacks a direct link to artificial-intelligence projects. The aim is to free up cash for the massive infrastructure investments needed to build out SAP’s AI platform while protecting the operating margin from the short-term hit of those outlays.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SAP?
That same day, the German cartel office gave the green light for two strategic acquisitions that underscore the direction of the strategy. SAP can now integrate Dremio Inc., a data-fabric platform that connects disparate data sources without physically moving them, accelerating the feeding of enterprise data into AI agents. The clearance also covers Prior Labs GmbH, which supplies tabular-data AI models that strengthen SAP’s finance and supply-chain systems. Both deals are intended to embed AI capabilities directly into the company’s cloud offerings.
A silver lining has emerged from the share-price slide. SAP is in the midst of a €2.6 billion share-buyback program, with the current tranche running through late July. The lower stock price means the company can repurchase more shares for the same outlay than it originally planned when the program was announced in February. The buyback is structural support, but so far it has not been enough to stem the selling pressure.
Technical indicators underscore the fragility. The 50-day moving average stands at €145.99, while the 200-day average is €179.66 — meaning the stock currently trades 23.10% below its long-term trend. The relative strength index of 45.4 points to neutral territory, but the annualized 30-day volatility of roughly 47% signals high market anxiety.
All eyes now turn to July 23, when CEO Christian Klein is due to report second-quarter results. With the company in its quiet period and declining to comment on ongoing business, investors will be looking for concrete proof that the AI investments are already translating into revenue and margin improvement. Until then, the market is left to weigh the cost-cutting discipline against the headwinds of geopolitics and sector rotation — a balancing act that has so far tipped heavily to the downside.
