Scottish Mortgage’s NAV Surges on Anthropic Filing but Weekly Profit?Taking Tempers Enthusiasm
Published on 06/06/2026 at 17:37 | Redaktion boerse-global.deA quietly building institutional presence in Scottish Mortgage Investment Trust is offering a counterpoint to the recent bouts of profit?taking that have clipped the shares. Mitsubishi UFJ Asset Management revealed it had increased its voting rights to more than 3% during the week, a move that underscores longer?term conviction even as short?term traders cash in on the trust’s string of IPO?driven highs.
That conviction was visible earlier in June when the trust placed a block of its own shares from treasury at a premium to net asset value. The issue price of 1,516.50 pence confirmed robust demand for a portfolio heavily weighted toward unlisted technology and artificial intelligence names. Such premium issuance is rare for an investment trust and signals that managers believe the underlying holdings are worth more than the market currently reflects.
At the heart of that belief are two blockbuster private?company stakes that are both moving closer to public markets. Anthropic, the AI developer that competes with OpenAI, submitted a confidential draft registration for a US initial public offering with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Scottish Mortgage holds 2.6% of the company, and the news immediately triggered a mark?up in the trust’s net asset value. The fund’s management wasted no time in reflecting the higher private valuation, a process that has material weight given that roughly 40% of its total assets sit in private enterprises.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Scottish Mortgage Investment?
The second and far larger catalyst is SpaceX. Elon Musk’s rocket builder is rumoured to be launching its IPO roadshow as early as this month, with a potential valuation of up to $1.75 trillion. Scottish Mortgage currently accounts for its stake at a $1.25 trillion valuation, meaning a successful float could unlock a massive re?rating. SpaceX alone represents more than 19% of the entire fund, making it the single most influential holding.
Yet all that promise has not protected the shares from a bout of profit?taking. After hitting a fresh record high on Tuesday in the wake of the Anthropic filing, the stock reversed sharply. By Friday’s close in London it had fallen 3.88% to €17.10, leaving it with a weekly loss of 5.39%. The year?to?date gain remains solid at roughly 23%, but the reversal has refocused attention on near?term support levels.
Chart technicians note that the shares finished the week above the 50?day moving average, which sits at €16.57. That line now serves as a first line of defence. To the upside, the year?high of €19.50 marks the next resistance. With Anthropic yet to set an official IPO price, the trust’s net asset value could be due for another upward adjustment once the final terms are released. For now, the mix of institutional accumulation and periodic profit?taking keeps Scottish Mortgage in a tug?of?war between its rich pipeline of private?market catalysts and the normal rhythms of a stock that has already run hard.
