Semtech Expands IoT Ambitions with New 5G Hardware and AI Focus
30.01.2026 - 19:16:04Semtech Corporation is strengthening its strategic position within the expansive Internet of Things (IoT) sector. The company's recent product launch and prominent showcase at a major tech conference underscore a focused push into next-generation connectivity and edge artificial intelligence (AI). This move raises questions about its potential to drive long-term, sustainable growth for the semiconductor and wireless technology provider.
The company's strategic direction was highlighted at the beginning of January during CES 2026, where it presented its portfolio of edge AI and LoRa-based solutions. This exhibition aligns with a significant company milestone: Semtech has now documented over 125 million active LoRaWAN devices globally, a figure that demonstrates substantial market penetration for its low-power, wide-area networking technology.
Launch of Energy-Efficient 5G Routers
On Tuesday, January 27, Semtech unveiled its new hardware: the AirLink RX400 and EX400 5G RedCap routers. These devices are engineered to deliver reliable, energy-efficient 5G connectivity for industrial and commercial applications.
The RX400 model is built for demanding outdoor environments. A key feature is its exceptionally low idle power consumption of under one watt, making it suitable for deployment at remote, off-grid sites. In contrast, the semi-rugged EX400 router targets commercial use cases across sectors including retail, manufacturing, and agriculture.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Semtech?
Both router models support 5G RedCap technology, which is based on the 3GPP Release 17 standard, as well as 5G Standalone (SA) architecture. To ensure deployment flexibility, the hardware also maintains backward compatibility with existing LTE networks.
Capitalizing on the 5G RedCap Growth Trajectory
The focus on 5G RedCap (Reduced Capability) technology is a direct response to a clear market trend. Industry forecasts project that global connections in this segment will surge to more than 656 million by the year 2030. For businesses, RedCap offers a balanced solution, providing enhanced longevity, power efficiency, and performance without incurring the high costs associated with traditional, full-featured 5G connectivity.
During CES 2026, company management emphasized the growing importance of its LoRa platform and the integration of edge AI for localized data processing. This strategy is supported by increasing market demand for flexible, interoperable solutions capable of handling image and audio data, as well as AI inference tasks at the network edge.
Investors awaiting concrete operational and financial data will get their next update in the spring. Semtech is scheduled to release its report for the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2026, with the announcement expected between March 12 and March 18, 2026.
