Short Sellers Face Mounting Pressure as ImmunityBio Shares Rebound

The volatile trading pattern for ImmunityBio continues unabated. After a double-digit percentage decline on Friday, buyers have returned with force at the start of the week, with shares gaining over 5% in pre-market trading Monday. As the market reassesses recent clinical trial data, short sellers are finding themselves under increasing pressure. The stock's powerful rally throughout January has already inflicted substantial paper losses on those betting against it.
Providing fundamental support for the share price are preliminary figures for 2025. The company's product revenue skyrocketed by approximately 700% year-over-year to around $113 million, driven by a significant increase in sales of Anktiva. Despite this explosive growth, the biotechnology firm continues to report losses due to substantial ongoing investment in clinical development. Cash and equivalents stood at roughly $242.8 million as of year-end 2025.
Additional financial flexibility has been secured through a modification of a $505 million convertible note with Nant Capital. The amended terms now permit a partial conversion of the debt into equity prior to maturity, offering greater balance sheet agility.
Clarifying the Clinical Data Picture
The trigger for Friday's more than 12% drop to $6.45 was the release of Phase 2 data for a glioblastoma treatment. Initial market uncertainty stemmed from the fact that the median overall survival for patients had not yet been reached.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ImmunityBio?
Over the weekend, founder Patrick Soon-Shiong clarified the positive nature of these results. He emphasized that patients remaining alive at 12 months, with the median not yet attained, represents a success. Typical survival rates for brain tumors at this stage are often only around six months. Of the 23 enrolled patients, 14 provided evaluable data.
A Costly Position for the Bears
For investors positioned for a declining share price, January is turning into a nightmare. Data from S3 Partners indicates that short sellers have accumulated roughly $492 million in mark-to-market losses during the stock's surge of over 200% in the past month.
Trading volume reached extreme levels on Friday, with 74.6 million shares changing hands. This represents an increase of nearly 240% compared to the three-month average. Sentiment among retail investors on social media platforms remains overwhelmingly optimistic.
Regulatory Milestones Under Scrutiny
While analysts have recently raised their price targets, bringing the current consensus to $11.40, the stock's future trajectory now heavily depends on regulatory timelines. All eyes are on the company's commitments to the FDA. ImmunityBio has pledged to submit additional information for its bladder cancer indication within 30 days of January 20, a process not expected to require new clinical studies.
