Short Sellers Tighten Grip on Valneva as Technical Signals Flash Oversold

Valneva's shares scraped a fresh 52-week trough of €2.12 on July 17, widening the year-to-date erosion to 42.28% and leaving the French vaccine developer nursing a market cap of roughly €441 million. Friday's close at €2.15, down 2.94%, came as bearish bets against the stock continued to accumulate in lockstep with the price decline.
The short-interest picture has grown increasingly crowded. Regulatory filings with the French markets authority AMF show that four investment funds collectively held short positions worth €11.79 million as of June 17, equivalent to 2.94% of Valneva's share capital. Among them, hedge fund D.E. Shaw disclosed a net short of 0.69% in April, and AMF records confirm it remained in a small group of funds actively betting against the stock through mid-2026. Under French law, investors must report any short exceeding 0.1% of capital, but public disclosure kicks in only above the 0.5% threshold — meaning the true level of bearish exposure may be even higher.
Technical metrics underscore the strain. The 14-day relative strength index sits at 35.2, pushing into oversold territory without yet triggering a convincing reversal. The stock now trades 37.34% below its 200-day moving average of €3.42 and a staggering 58.41% beneath the 52-week high of €5.16 notched in August 2025. A 30-day annualised volatility reading of nearly 27% signals that investor uncertainty remains acute, and the current price hovers just 1.32% above the new low — a razor-thin cushion that leaves the door open for further mechanical selling if that floor gives way.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Valneva?
The persistent selling pressure traces directly to the FDA's long shadow over Valneva's Chikungunya vaccine IXCHIQ. The US regulator suspended the product's licence in August 2025 following a serious adverse event reported abroad, and subsequently placed the clinical investigational status on hold. Valneva voluntarily withdrew its US marketing applications in January 2026. Outside the United States, IXCHIQ retains approvals in Europe, Canada, the UK and Brazil for at-risk populations, and the company continues to engage with those health authorities — but the US logjam has crippled the commercial narrative.
Against this difficult backdrop, investors have pinned much of their hope on the pipeline, particularly the Lyme borreliosis vaccine candidate LB6V developed with Pfizer. Partner Pfizer has reported positive Phase 3 results showing strong efficacy and no safety concerns, and is now preparing global regulatory filings. That catalyst, however, remains months away from materialising. The next scheduled event is Valneva's second-quarter earnings in August, when management is expected to provide an update on both the Lyme programme and the broader pipeline strategy — a report that will either reinforce the bearish thesis or offer the first credible signal of a turnaround. For now, short sellers are comfortably in control.
