Silver falls to $57.40 amid Fed rate hike bets and easing Middle East tensions, but a sixth straight annual supply deficit hints at underlying strength.

Silver careered to a six-month low on Tuesday, settling at $57.40, as a resurgent US dollar and a sudden easing of geopolitical tensions overwhelmed what is shaping up to be a sixth consecutive annual supply deficit. The precious metal shed 0.65% on the day, breaching a key moving average that now acts as stubborn resistance.

The primary culprit is the Federal Reserve. Markets are pricing in a 68% probability that the central bank will deliver another rate hike in September 2026, a move that has propelled the greenback to near one-year highs. A stronger dollar makes dollar-denominated bullion more expensive for international buyers, prompting speculative funds to slash long positions. Adding to the headwinds, the so-called geopolitical risk premium has evaporated. The Islamabad Memorandum between the US and Iran, coupled with peace talks in Doha this week, has calmed nerves in the Middle East, even as skirmishes in the Strait of Hormuz continue to flash on the radar.

Yet beneath the price action, the physical market is sending a very different signal. The Silver Institute projects a global supply shortfall of nearly 46.3 million ounces for 2026, marking the sixth straight year of deficit. Demand patterns, however, are diverging sharply. The solar industry is expected to consume roughly 19% less silver this year as more efficient printing techniques and copper alternatives gain traction. That drag is being more than offset by an explosion in technology demand: data centers and high-performance chips for artificial intelligence are now consuming 25% more silver annually, capitalizing on the metal’s unrivaled conductivity. Analysts note these structural shifts are making the supply squeeze far more acute than headline prices suggest.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Silber Preis?

On the demand side, China remains a wild card. Data from the Shanghai Metals Market paint a bleak picture: spot markets in the country’s industrial processing hubs were exceptionally weak through the end of June, with transaction volumes shrinking as buyers sat on their hands ahead of key US jobs data. This industrial lull comes at a time when the Fed, under chair Kevin Warsh, is firmly holding the line on its 2% inflation target, and the broader precious metals complex is feeling the heat. Gold slid roughly 11% in June, and silver is now following in lockstep.

Technically, the white metal has entered deeply oversold territory. The relative strength index has dipped to near 30, hinting that a bounce could be imminent. Immediate support lies at $56.60; if that gives way, the next floor sits at $54.86. To the upside, the 20-day exponential moving average at $64.57 presents a formidable ceiling. Meanwhile, the gold-silver ratio sits at a neutral 69, offering little directional guidance. For now, the tug-of-war between a hawkish Fed, cooling Chinese demand, and a widening structural deficit leaves silver traders caught between two powerful, opposing forces.
