SK Hynix Contains Factory Fire While Unleashing iHBM and Record Payouts

01.06.2026 - 12:01:30 | boerse-global.de

Despite hydrogen fluoride leak at Cheongju site, SK Hynix's cleanrooms untouched; record Q1 revenue over 50 trillion won and iHBM thermal breakthrough boost stock 245% YTD.

SK Hynix began the trading week with a gas leak at its Cheongju site that forced the evacuation of more than 3,600 workers, yet the incident left the chipmaker's production lines untouched and investors largely unfazed. The fire, which broke out at 10:32 a.m. local time in a gas supply room connecting the M15 and M15X fabrication lines, was extinguished by automatic sprinklers within ten minutes. The more serious concern was a hydrogen fluoride leak that registered between 5 and 5.3 parts per million — well above South Korea's 3 ppm safety threshold. Seven employees were sent to medical facilities as a precaution; five reported eye irritation and two were examined without symptoms. SK Hynix attributed the incident to a small spark during maintenance work on a fluorine line. Fifteen fire trucks and 45 emergency personnel secured the area.

The critical takeaway for investors is that the cleanroom environments where wafer production occurs were never compromised. The company stated that neither equipment nor production targets suffered any disruption. That assurance carries weight given the tight supply of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips for AI applications — any halt would have rippled through the global supply chain. Environmental and labor authorities are expected to review the hydrogen fluoride exceedance, though SK Hynix has not yet set a timeline for restoring the affected gas line.

The fire incident comes hard on the heels of a record-breaking first quarter. For the three months ended March 2026, SK Hynix posted its strongest performance ever: revenue surpassed 50 trillion won for the first time, operating profit hit 37.6 trillion won, and operating margins reached 72%, with net margins at 77%. The company attributed the surge to insatiable AI demand and a growing mix of premium-priced products, noting that orders continue to outstrip its ability to supply. Against that backdrop, the board declared a quarterly dividend of 375 won per share, payable to shareholders of record on May 31, 2026 — a total payout of approximately 265.76 billion won. While modest relative to current earnings, the distribution signals confidence amid an aggressive investment cycle.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The real driver of the stock's momentum, however, lies in SK Hynix's thermal management breakthrough. Late last month the company unveiled iHBM, an architecture that embeds cooling elements directly into the HBM package. According to the firm, thermal resistance drops by more than 30% — a critical advantage in hyperscale AI servers where heat dissipation has become a bottleneck. Securing design wins with major cloud operators could cement SK Hynix's lead in the HBM market.

Shares closed on Friday at a 52-week high of 2,333,000 won, translating to a year-to-date gain of roughly 245%. The relative strength index sits near 69, and annualised volatility is running close to 78% — a reflection of the high-stakes, high-reward nature of the AI memory trade. The company also disclosed the sale of 12,536 treasury shares worth 15.34 billion won, earmarked as compensation for outside directors and long-term performance incentives for executives.

The balancing act between returning capital and funding future capacity is becoming the central story for SK Hynix. Investments are flowing into the M15X fab ramp-up, the construction of the Yongin semiconductor cluster, and the procurement of EUV lithography equipment. Whether the first quarter's record becomes the new normal depends on how long AI demand sustains the pricing power that made those numbers possible. The fire at Cheongju, though contained without production losses, serves as a reminder that even the best-laid operational plans can face unexpected tests.
