SK Hynix’s stock tore through the 2 million won barrier in regular trading for the first time on Tuesday, closing at 2,052,000 won as a sweeping geopolitical rally dovetailed with the structural AI memory boom. The chipmaker’s shares surged 111,000 won, or 5.72%, and touched an intraday high of 2,087,000 won during the session.

The immediate catalyst was a flurry of reports suggesting progress in US-Iran ceasefire talks, which reignited risk appetite across Asian markets. West Texas Intermediate crude plunged more than 6%, while the yield on 10-year US Treasuries dipped below 4.5%. That macro relief unlocked buying from institutional and foreign investors, both net acquirers of KOSPI-listed stocks on the day. The benchmark index itself broke through the 8,000-point milestone to close at 8,047.51, up 199.80 points or 2.55%.

Yet the rally was not merely a function of short-term sentiment. SK Hynix’s dominance in high-bandwidth memory and other AI-driven storage products has become the bedrock of its valuation. In the first quarter of 2026, the company reported revenue of 52.58 trillion won, operating profit of 37.61 trillion won, and net profit of 40.35 trillion won. Management attributed the performance to rising volumes of premium products — HBM, high-capacity server DRAM modules, and enterprise SSDs — as customer demand continues to outstrip production capacity.

That pricing power and product mix have pushed SK Hynix’s market capitalization to 1,462.47 trillion won after Tuesday’s close. But the stock’s trajectory now hinges on more than just quarterly numbers. The company is simultaneously executing a $3.87 billion advanced packaging and R&D facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, dedicated to HBM production. The US Commerce Department is chipping in as much as $458 million from the CHIPS program, and mass production is targeted for the second half of 2028.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

Progress on the ground has been tangible. Local authorities in West Lafayette and Tippecanoe County approved road construction projects in April linked to the plant. In January, the city issued three building permits worth $98 million for foundation work on an office, a manufacturing building, and a utility structure. Further permits for fencing and earthmoving followed in February, and pile driving was scheduled to begin April 17, 2026.

Not everyone is cheering. Some residents have pushed back against the rezoning of the site and raised concerns about water supply — a reminder that large-scale semiconductor projects face friction even with state and federal support. Delays in infrastructure, permitting, or local litigation could stretch the timeline from investment to revenue.

SK Hynix enters this build-out on solid financial footing. As of end-March, the company held 54.3 trillion won in cash and short-term assets against 19.3 trillion won in interest-bearing debt, yielding a net cash position of 35 trillion won. That buffer provides ample room to fund the Indiana capital expenditure while continuing to invest in next-generation memory technologies.

SK Hynix at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For now, the market is betting that the combination of easing geopolitical tensions and unrelenting AI demand can sustain the stock’s momentum. Tuesday’s 2 million won break was a psychological milestone, but the deeper story lies in how quickly SK Hynix can convert its Indiana plant from an engineering blueprint into a fully operational link in the US AI supply chain.
