A fire that broke out on June 12 at SK Hynix’s Cheongju chip campus saw thousands of employees evacuated, but the incident barely registered with investors. The stock closed the week at 2,150,000 Won, up 2.3% on Friday, and the company has since moved swiftly to roll out a series of strategic announcements that underscore its confidence in the AI-driven memory boom. Beyond the smoke, SK Hynix is racing on several fronts simultaneously: massively expanding production capacity, advancing NAND technology, and preparing a high-profile US listing.

The South Korean chipmaker is bringing forward its factory construction timeline by a full decade. Chairman Chey Tae-won is overseeing the build-out of four new fabrication plants in Yongin, with the goal of tripling wafer output by 2034 — ten years earlier than originally planned. The facilities are designed to meet the insatiable demand for DRAM and NAND storage that underpins artificial intelligence infrastructure, though the company acknowledges that new capacity takes years to reach the market and will not resolve near-term supply constraints.

On the technology front, SK Hynix has completed validation of 375-layer NAND flash memory, with mass production scheduled to begin by the end of 2026. Higher layer counts translate into greater storage density, a critical requirement for hyperscale data centers. The company’s roadmap extends all the way to chips with more than 600 layers, signaling a broad push to reclaim technology leadership in the more cyclical NAND segment, complementing its already dominant position in high-bandwidth memory (HBM).

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

The HBM business got a fresh boost in early June when SK Hynix and Nvidia signed a multi-year partnership to co-develop the next generation of memory chips for AI factories. The deal cemented the Korean company’s role as Nvidia’s primary HBM supplier and sent shares climbing. The stock now trades just 11% below its all-time high set earlier in June, having surged roughly 218% since the start of the year. Despite that run, annualized volatility has exceeded 100%, reflecting the market’s aggressive pricing of AI expectations.

In a move that could further broaden its investor base, SK Hynix is targeting a Nasdaq listing in August 2026. The company has chosen the tech-heavy exchange over the NYSE to reinforce its identity as a pure-play semiconductor innovator. A US listing would allow American funds that cannot or will not hold Korean stocks to buy in, boosting liquidity and potentially supporting valuations. Formal steps such as an SEC filing have not yet been confirmed, so the August date remains an internal target.

The HBM boom is also shifting power dynamics in the supply chain. SK Hynix is reportedly considering price increases from its tier-1 equipment vendors, a sign that leverage is moving toward the chipmaker as demand for AI memory outpaces supply. The company’s strong position with Nvidia places it at the center of the AI hardware ecosystem.

The next major milestone will be the start of NAND mass production in late 2026. That will be a critical test of whether SK Hynix can sustain the rich margins that its current valuation implies. For now, the market is betting that the company can balance its aggressive expansion, technological leaps, and a transatlantic listing — all while keeping a fire at one of its campuses from becoming more than a footnote.
