SK Hynix’s AI Memory Dominance Faces a Two-Front Test: Rival Catch-Up and Packaging Bottlenecks

SK Hynix shares hit new highs as AI memory demand booms, but Samsung's HBM4 qualification and a potential packaging shift to Intel pose competitive risks.

SK Hynix is riding a wave that has pushed its shares to new all-time highs, but the company’s leadership in the red-hot high-bandwidth memory market is drawing competitive fire from two angles — Samsung’s renewed push into HBM4 and a potential shift in chip packaging strategy away from TSMC.

The Seoul-listed stock surged 7.68 percent on Wednesday to 1,976,000 won, lifting its year-to-date gain to 191.88 percent. That rally has been fuelled by a combination of exclusive supply relationships, rising memory prices and a drumbeat of analyst upgrades.

Chief Executive Kwak Noh-jung’s appearance at Microsoft’s CEO Summit alongside Bill Gates and Satya Nadella underscored the strategic importance of SK Hynix’s role as the sole supplier of HBM3E memory for Microsoft’s Maia 200 AI accelerator. The chipmaker’s technology is already deployed in Microsoft’s Des Moines data centre and is being expanded in Phoenix. With Google, Amazon and other cloud giants also scrambling to lock in future HBM capacity, SK Hynix has become the bottleneck in the AI infrastructure build-out — a position that commands pricing power and long-term contract visibility.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying SK Hynix?

That scarcity is showing up in the numbers. KB Securities lifted its price target by 40 percent to 2.8 million won, with research chief Kim Dong-won arguing that earnings estimates are rising faster than the stock price, leaving room for further revaluation. The firm expects operating profit to hit 270 trillion won this year and climb to 418 trillion won in 2026. Other analysts have followed: UBS raised its target to 1.7 million won, while SK Securities sits at 3.0 million won. LS Securities now sees a target of 2.1 million won.

A deeper look at the supply picture reveals why analysts are so bullish. SK Hynix has declared its entire DRAM, NAND and HBM output sold out, with some customer orders unfilled. Goldman Sachs recently widened its forecast for the 2026 DRAM supply gap from 3.3 percent to 4.9 percent, calling it the most severe shortage in 15 years. SK Group chairman Chey Tae-won has warned that wafer shortages could persist into 2030.

Yet the company’s path is not without obstacles. Samsung, the archrival, has reportedly passed final qualification tests for HBM4 at Nvidia and AMD, with initial large-scale shipments expected from June. If Samsung achieves series production in the second half of 2026, SK Hynix could lose market share. On top of that, an unconfirmed report that SK Hynix is jointly developing new packaging technology with Intel — using Intel’s EMIB approach as a cheaper alternative to TSMC’s dominant CoWoS method — sent the stock jumping 15 percent intraday on Monday. Neither company has commented on the rumours, but TSMC’s packaging bottlenecks have pushed tech giants to seek alternatives. SK Hynix is also building its own capacity in the United States and South Korea.

The next inflection point for the stock will depend on how quickly cloud customers scale their HBM deployment — and how fast Samsung can close the technology gap. Until SK Hynix brings its new Cheongju and Yongin capacity online in meaningful volumes around mid-2027, every move by a rival or a customer will be amplified in the share price.
