The problem is not just soreness after a long scroll. Experts warn that constant use of mobile devices can create serious orthopedic damage, and the posture people adopt while looking down at a phone is a major reason why.
When the head tips forward toward a smartphone, it can place as much as five times its own weight on the neck muscles, physiotherapist Gabriele Kiesling explained in Mitte Juli 2026. That kind of mechanical load, she said, can lead to effects far beyond ordinary tension.

Prevention starts with reducing smartphone use as consistently as possible. For people who cannot do without the device, a phone stand is recommended. That lifts the screen to eye level and reduces the amount of neck flexion.
Other recommended measures include:
- Targeted relief positions and mobility exercises for the cervical spine
- Heat applications to relax the muscles
- Training the deep neck flexors — for example by lifting the head from a supine position
A clicking sound in the joints without pain is usually harmless, according to a physiotherapist in a recent publication. If dizziness, nausea or pain occur, however, medical assessment is necessary.
Fitness also matters beyond everyday ergonomics. New research from DKFZ and Deakin University shows that just 40 to 60 minutes of intensive strength training per week already meets WHO recommendations.
