T-Mobile US Shake-Up Lifts Deutsche Telekom, but Holding Plan Faces Investor Backlash

Deutsche Telekom shares rise 3.4% on T-Mobile US management shakeup and 5G price hikes, but structural uncertainty from a potential holding company plan and government skepticism weighs on sentiment.

The push-pull of operational improvements and structural uncertainty has Deutsche Telekom’s stock caught between two narratives. A 3.4 percent jump to €26.15 on Friday snapped a weak patch for the shares, but beneath the surface, investor sentiment remains fractured.

The immediate catalyst came from T-Mobile US, where a sweeping management overhaul and plans to shift millions of legacy customers onto pricier 5G plans gave markets reason to cheer. Mike Katz is stepping down as Chief Business and Product Officer, effective July 8, though he will stay on as a strategic adviser until the end of the year. Chris Sambar, who spent 22 years at AT&T before a brief stint at Public Storage, is taking over as Chief Enterprise Officer by mid-October. Additional changes see André Almeida become Chief Marketing, Brand and Broadband Officer, while CTO John Saw adds product development and cybersecurity to his remit. Analysts at JPMorgan and Deutsche Bank kept bullish targets of €40 and €42 respectively, arguing the reshuffle and price hikes should bolster T-Mobile US’s margin profile.

Yet even as the US arm signals higher revenue, the parent company’s grand strategic ambitions are running into headwinds. Reports from the Neue Zürcher Zeitung suggest management is exploring a holding structure that would more tightly bind Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile US, a move aimed at closing the valuation gap with the more richly traded American subsidiary. Major investors have pushed back. Jens Ehrhardt of DJE Kapital and Martin Wirth of FPM voiced criticism, and one unnamed top-30 shareholder warned the plan could erode the entire group’s market value. Germany’s government, which owns roughly 28 percent of the stock, is said to be skeptical. Deutsche Telekom has not commented officially on the speculation.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Deutsche Telekom?

On the trading floor, the buyback programme has been a steadying force. During the first week of July the company repurchased roughly 908,705 shares on Xetra at an average price of €24.74, spending about €22.5 million. With a full-year buyback budget of up to €2 billion, that support is likely to persist regardless of the holding debate’s outcome.

The chart, however, remains a work in progress. Friday’s rally carried the stock above its 20-day moving average, but it still sits 4.48 percent below the 50-day line at €27.38 and roughly 9 percent beneath the 200-day average of €28.76. At €26.15, the shares are nearly 24 percent off the 52-week high of €34.35 from early February. The relative strength index of 48.2 points to neither overbought nor oversold conditions, while annualised volatility of 31.57 percent suggests nerves remain high.

Over the past month the stock has fallen 8.18 percent, and the year-to-date loss stands at 6.17 percent. The 12-month picture is even weaker, with a decline of 14.54 percent. All eyes now turn to July 23, when T-Mobile US reports second-quarter results. That release will test whether the operational changes — from the C-suite reshuffle to the tariff migration starting this week — can translate into hard numbers. Until then, the shares will likely oscillate between the stabilising effect of buybacks and the nagging uncertainty over what form Deutsche Telekom’s future corporate structure will take.
