Thyssenkrupp has clawed back more than two-thirds of its value from a March nadir, as a newly erected European tariff wall and a pending corporate break-up spur investors to reassess the long?ailing industrial conglomerate. The stock, which hit a 52?week low of €7.10 on 30 March 2026, now trades at €11.87 – a rebound of 67.14% that has lifted it comfortably above all major moving averages.

The catalyst for the latest leg higher arrived on 1 July, when Brussels slashed the duty?free steel import quota to 18.3 million tonnes a year and slapped a 50% tariff on any tonnage above that level – double the previous surcharge. For Thyssenkrupp’s steel division, which sells almost exclusively inside the bloc, the measure offers a tangible pricing cushion. The market reacted swiftly: the shares jumped 5.04% on Friday alone and have advanced 15.13% over the past seven trading days, taking the year?to?date gain to 22.73%.

Yet the tariff shield alone does not explain the renewed interest. Investors are also focusing on the group’s internal transformation. On 7 August, a general meeting will vote on the spin?off of the materials trading unit tk accelis – the next step in a strategy that began with the separation of Thyssenkrupp Marine Systems in October 2025. With a market capitalisation of €6.48 billion, the company is increasingly being valued on a sum?of?the?parts basis, a shift that has helped it shed the traditional conglomerate discount.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Thyssenkrupp?

Chart?wise, the picture has brightened materially. The stock has broken above the 200?day moving average of €9.99 and now sits 18.84% above it. The relative strength index of 63.2 points to strong momentum without yet flashing overbought. Volatility, however, remains elevated: the 30?day annualised figure stands at 49.10%, reflecting the risks still embedded in the turnaround story.

Those risks are real. The near?term effect of the steel tariffs may be more stabilising than growth?driving, given that European demand is expected to rise only modestly in 2026. Meanwhile, Thyssenkrupp is pressing ahead with a painful restructuring: a social plan running to 2030 covers the elimination of roughly 11,000 jobs at the steel division, and the company is closing a US automotive components plant in Indiana by March 2027. On the supply side, the competitiveness of its direct?reduction plants in Duisburg hinges on securing raw materials – a potential bottleneck for the green?transformation agenda.

None of these headwinds has yet derailed the recovery. The stock now sits just 10.38% shy of its 52?week high of €13.24, and the path to that level runs through two milestones: the shareholder vote on the accelis spin?off and the first tangible impact of the new tariff regime on the order books. The next quarterly report, due in August, will offer an early glimpse of whether the political tailwind is translating into hard numbers. For a company long seen as a perpetual restructuring case, the market is finally watching it walk – and in the right direction.
