Water Safety Campaign Reaches Deaf Community

To mark World Drowning Prevention Day on July 25, fire and rescue services launched targeted education initiatives. Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service, working with students from Northern Counties School, released a series of water safety videos delivered in British Sign Language. The project provides vital information — including emergency contact procedures and the Float to Live technique — to young people with hearing impairments.

Internationally, fire police in Vietnam's Phu Quy Special Zone and Lam Dong province conducted similar outreach, training more than 100 students and tourists in drowning prevention, first aid, and the correct use of life jackets at local beaches.

Charity Sets Ambitious Five-Year Target

The Fire Fighters Charity has introduced a new five-year strategy aimed at significantly expanding its reach within the UK fire service community. The organisation reported supporting a record 13,507 individuals during the 2025/26 period, noting a 10% increase in demand for psychological services. Under the new plan, the charity aims to double the proportion of eligible beneficiaries receiving assistance to 30% of the 360,000-strong workforce by 2030.

In Florida, the North Collier Fire and Rescue District launched a mobile integrated healthcare unit on July 20. The MH-45 unit responds to non-emergent 911 calls, providing advanced and basic life support transport without lights and sirens, preserving emergency resources for critical incidents.

In Mississippi, the Vicksburg Fire Department completed a four-day confined space rescue programme in collaboration with the Grand Gulf Nuclear Plant, preparing 15 personnel to manage hazards and specialised equipment in restricted environments.
