Valneva shares have lost more than 41% of their value since the start of the year, leaving the stock hovering near its 52-week low of €2.13 as the biotech group scrambles to restore investor faith. On Tuesday, the stock slipped another 1.41% to €2.24, closing in on a critical support level at €2.21 that is now under close watch by traders.

The technical picture looks strained. The stock trades well below its 200-day moving average, and the relative strength index has dropped to 38 points, signalling an oversold condition. The distance from the long-term trendline stands at an alarming 37%, underscoring just how far sentiment has soured.

New Chairman Steps into the Fray

In a bid to right the ship, Valneva has shaken up its boardroom. At the annual general meeting in Lyon, shareholders approved a slate of resolutions, the most consequential being the appointment of Dr. Gerd Zettlmeissl as chairman of the supervisory board. He succeeds Anne-Marie Graffin, who remains as vice-chair. Zettlmeissl brings more than four decades of experience in biopharmaceuticals, with a particular focus on vaccine development — a background that aligns squarely with Valneva’s pipeline ambitions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Valneva?

The leadership change coincides with a broader restructuring. Valneva has officially relocated its headquarters to Lyon and completed the closure of its Nantes site. These moves are aimed at streamlining operations, but for now, the market remains unimpressed.

Pipeline Hopes Rest on Two Fronts

All eyes are now on Valneva’s clinical pipeline, which offers two potential catalysts in the second half of the year. The centerpiece is the Lyme disease vaccine candidate LB6V, developed in partnership with Pfizer. Positive efficacy data from the pivotal trial have already been reported, and Pfizer is preparing regulatory submissions. Analysts point to the huge addressable market: roughly 476,000 cases are diagnosed each year in the United States alone, and surveys among hunters and hikers in high-risk areas show strong willingness to vaccinate.

Alongside the Lyme filing, Valneva is set to release phase?2 data for its shigellosis vaccine candidate — a program that targets a bacterial infection common in developing regions and among travellers. The management team will present these results in due course, offering another potential inflection point for the stock.

Until these catalysts materialise, the shares are likely to remain stuck in a narrow consolidation phase. The new chairman’s mandate is clear: restore investor trust and execute on the regulatory milestones ahead. Zettlmeissl will be under immediate pressure to deliver, with the Lyme vaccine application representing the most tangible near-term trigger for a recovery.
