Civil construction has officially kicked off at Vulcan Energy’s Lionheart project in Landau, with the company moving past early earthworks and into the foundation and concrete phase. The milestone, announced on July 27, marks a tangible step forward for the geothermal-lithium venture, even as the company’s share price continues to trade near distressed levels.

The work underway includes laying foundations and pouring extensive concrete for the geothermal power plant’s buildings, upgrading road infrastructure, and preparing the site for process equipment. Once completed, the next stage will involve erecting structures and installing specialised on-site machinery. Lionheart, situated in the Upper Rhine brine region, is designed to produce 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate annually, alongside 275 gigawatt-hours of renewable electricity and 560 gigawatt-hours of heat for the local area.

The construction news comes at a critical juncture for Vulcan’s stock, which has been under severe pressure. Shares edged up 3.05 percent to €1.66 on Monday, recovering slightly from a fresh 52-week low of €1.60 hit the previous Friday. Yet the longer-term picture remains bleak: the stock has shed 35.15 percent since the start of the year and sits 58.44 percent below its 2026 high of €3.98. The 14-day relative strength index, at 36, points to an oversold condition — a technical signal that selling pressure may be exhausting itself and a consolidation or bounce could be on the horizon.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Vulcan Energy?

The disconnect between operational progress and market performance is not solely Vulcan’s own doing. Volatile lithium carbonate prices and the extended lead times inherent in large-scale geothermal-lithium projects have weighed on the entire sector, making it difficult for even well-funded developers to escape the broader downdraft.

Financing, at least, is no longer a question mark. In late May, Vulcan closed a €2.2 billion funding package backed by a consortium of 13 lenders, including the European Investment Bank and multiple export credit agencies. By mid-July, the company had already satisfied the conditions for its first strategic drawdown under that facility, ensuring liquidity for the current construction schedule.

All eyes now turn to Thursday, July 30, when Vulcan releases its June-quarter report. Investors will be looking for three key updates: progress at the Central Lithium Plant in Frankfurt’s Industriepark Höchst, where lithium chloride is converted into battery-grade lithium hydroxide monohydrate; the status of cash reserves and capital deployment following the initial tranche from the financing package; and reaffirmation that first production remains on track for 2028. The report will also likely shed light on the Trappelberg drilling site, which is expected to become active later this year.

For a stock that has lost more than a third of its value in 2026, the quarterly update represents a potential inflection point — a chance for Vulcan to demonstrate that its Lionheart project can deliver on schedule and within budget, and that the operational story is strong enough to finally break free from the sector’s gravitational pull.
