Decades after the Second World War ended, unexploded ordnance continues to disrupt daily life in Germany. This week, a series of bomb-disposal missions in three federal states prompted the evacuation of more than 3,000 residents, closures of major transport routes, and coordinated responses from police, fire services, and volunteer organisations.

The largest operation took place on Tuesday in the Brandenburg towns of Hohen Neuendorf and Oranienburg. Two 250?kilogram bombs from the war were discovered in the Borgsdorf district, forcing authorities to establish a 1,200?metre exclusion zone. By 8 a.m., 2,500 residents in Borgsdorf and another 414 people in Oranienburg had left their homes. The S?Bahn line S1 was suspended between 8 a.m. and late afternoon, and the federal highway B96 was shut completely. Evacuation centres were set up at the Hohen Neuendorf town hall and the Oranienburg community centre. At 2:46 p.m., police gave the all?clear after the bombs were successfully defused.

Concurrently, a different threat was dealt with in the Lossow district of Frankfurt (Oder). A tank shell discovered the previous day on Lindenstrasse was deliberately detonated. Around 300 residents were evacuated from a 500?metre radius starting at 8 a.m. The controlled explosion occurred at 10 a.m., and by 10:45 a.m. the first evacuees were allowed to return.

Earlier in the week, operations proceeded with fewer disruptions. On Monday, experts in Dinslaken, North Rhine?Westphalia, defused two tank shells found on Bertastrasse. With a comparatively small 70?metre safety zone, about 70 residents from five surrounding streets were evacuated. The controlled explosion was completed without incident, and all residents were back home before 6 p.m.

The week’s activities began on Sunday in the Klietzer See area of Stendal district, Saxony?Anhalt. Bomb?disposal teams neutralised two anti?tank mines. Residents were evacuated, and the Klietz village community centre served as an emergency shelter.

Background: Despite the passage of more than 80 years since 1945, Germany still uncovers thousands of unexploded bombs and munitions annually. In Brandenburg alone, authorities estimate that tens of thousands of items from World War II remain undiscovered in the ground.
