XRP Ledger’s Rougher-Than-Expected Upgrade Exposes the Gap Between Roadmap and Reality

Only 26% of nodes updated to version 3.2.0 after bugs emerged; XRP price falls 39% YTD, but RWA tokenization and ETF inflows signal strong institutional interest.

A software update designed to slash server resource use by up to 40% has instead laid bare the operational friction of upgrading a decentralized network. As of June 20, only 26% of XRP Ledger nodes had installed version 3.2.0 — the first release to carry the rebranded “rippled” core software — after operators reported configuration file parsing errors and synchronization failures. The XRP Ledger Foundation confirmed on June 22 that the bugs had been identified and patched following a formal security audit by blockchain security firm Common Prefix, though investigations into transaction relay issues remain open. No major network outage has occurred, but the sluggish adoption rate underscores how even well-intentioned protocol improvements can stumble in practice.

The upgrade had been billed as a critical efficiency gain, yet the rollout turbulence coincides with an ambitious five-point strategic roadmap designed to future-proof the ledger. Among the most headline-grabbing targets is quantum resistance: Ripple and community developers aim to implement hybrid signature technology by 2028, allowing the network to shift to stronger encryption as quantum hardware matures. Closer to the present, a native credit protocol introduced in specification 3.1.0 enables fixed-rate on-chain loans through Single Asset Vaults, removing the need for external applications. The automated market maker is slated for a version 2 upgrade that introduces a StableSwap architecture and concentrated liquidity pools, with a draft standard published in May. On the security front, a dedicated red team has already identified 287 vulnerabilities on GitHub using AI-driven methods, and formal verification of critical components is underway.

None of these technical ambitions, however, have been enough to arrest the price slide. XRP trades near $1.13, roughly 7% above its 52-week low of $1.05 set in early June, and a steep 39% below the level at the start of the year. The relative strength index hovers around 40, while the 200-day moving average sits at $1.54 — a level the token has consistently failed to reclaim. The disconnect between network development and market price is stark.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?

Institutionally, the tokenization of real-world assets on the XRP Ledger has become a bright spot. Over the past 90 days, net inflows into RWA tokenization projects reached $1.9 billion, outpacing Ethereum’s $1.6 billion and Stellar’s $1.4 billion. Data for the most recent 60 days shows $1.7 billion of net inflows even as several competing chains recorded outflows. The momentum has extended to exchange-traded products: during the week of June 14–18, XRP spot ETFs attracted $10.66 million in net inflows, led by Franklin Templeton’s product with $6.69 million and Bitwise with $3.97 million. Cumulative historical inflows across all XRP spot ETFs now stand at $1.45 billion.

Meanwhile, the supply picture is tightening. The amount of XRP held on centralized exchanges has fallen to a seven-year low of roughly 1.6 billion tokens, a 50% decline from the October 2025 peak of 3.76 billion. Some 38.15 billion XRP remain locked in Ripple’s escrow contracts, with monthly releases of 1 billion tokens that are mostly re-locked — a mechanism that pro-XRP lawyer Bill Morgan argues is fully priced in. Yet despite the shrinking available supply, selling pressure persists; the current price sits about 69% below the 52-week high of $3.65.

Ripple has also launched the “Make Waves” initiative, offering developers up to 50,000 XRP for launching working applications on the ledger. And a strategic investment in African payments firm Flutterwave aims to integrate the RLUSD stablecoin and XRPL infrastructure into its platform. These moves, combined with the roadmap’s ambitious milestones, paint a picture of a network that is building aggressively for the long term — but for now, the gap between technical progress and price performance remains wide.
