A €9 Billion Income Fund Sits a Hair's Breadth From a Record as Its Biggest Holdings Deliver

The VanEck Morningstar Developed Markets Dividend Leaders UCITS ETF has spent the past week watching its heavyweight positions roll out earnings — and the cumulative effect has been enough to push the fund within striking distance of its all-time high. At 55.37 euros, the vehicle is barely 0.5 percent below the peak it touched on August 4, with a year-to-date advance of roughly 15.3 percent and a 12-month gain of 27.34 percent.
A Financial-Heavy Portfolio Reaps the Rewards
The fund's tilt toward financials — a sector weighting of around 44 percent following a June rebalancing — has proven timely. HSBC Holdings, one of the portfolio's largest stakes at roughly 4.7 percent, reported a 23 percent jump in pre-tax profit to 19.5 billion US dollars for the first half, buoyed by higher interest income. The bank paired those numbers with a second interim dividend of 0.10 US dollars per share and a fresh buyback program of up to one billion US dollars.
Zurich Insurance Group added to the momentum on August 6 with a record operating profit of 4.8 billion US dollars for the first half, up 13 percent. The insurer also raised its full-year growth guidance for the life insurance division to at least 10 percent.
Allianz Delivers a Record — With a Caveat
The spotlight then shifted to Allianz, another core holding, which published its second-quarter figures on August 7. The headline was a record operating profit of 4.9 billion euros, up 10.6 percent, driven by double-digit growth in asset management and the life and health insurance segments. Business volume climbed to 45.6 billion euros from 44.5 billion euros a year earlier, with internal growth of 5.7 percent.
The net picture was less flattering. Allianz earned 2.595 billion euros after tax, an 8.7 percent decline year-on-year and clearly shy of the 2.787 billion euros analysts had penciled in. Management nonetheless reaffirmed its full-year profit guidance.
The fund's asset management arm proved a bright spot: Pimco attracted 31.7 billion euros in net inflows from external clients during the quarter, while sister company Allianz Global Investors pulled in 7.6 billion euros. The solvency ratio improved to 225 percent, seven percentage points above year-end 2025 levels. On the capital returns front, the insurer has deployed 1.4 billion euros of the up-to-2.5-billion-euro buyback announced in February within the first six months of 2026.
Telecom and Energy Add to the Tailwind
Financials weren't the only source of support. Deutsche Telekom reported on August 6 with revenue up 4.4 percent to 29.9 billion euros, prompting the group to lift its free cash flow forecast to roughly 20 billion euros and add another 3 billion euros to its 2026 buyback program. BP and Pfizer also delivered results this week that align with the fund's income-focused mandate — a clustering of strong reports that rarely arrives in a single week.
A Dividend Machine in Focus
The earnings flurry lands as the fund's distribution profile draws renewed attention. The most recent payout, dated August 1, stood at 0.81 euros per share, with an expected dividend yield of 5.89 percent. The fund typically distributes quarterly.
The ETF tracks the Morningstar Developed Markets Large Cap Dividend Leaders Screened Select Index, which screens for companies with reliable payout histories and applies ESG filters. With roughly 9.05 billion euros in assets and a total expense ratio of 0.38 percent, it ranks among Europe's larger dividend-oriented UCITS funds. VanEck is the sole provider offering full physical replication of the index and also markets a regional version excluding US equities for investors seeking to reduce concentration risk.
The fund's technical position remains constructive: an RSI of 66.5 points to sustained upward pressure without tipping into overbought territory. Whether Allianz's mixed-but-solid numbers — record operating profit, softer net income, intact guidance — provide the final push toward a new peak will depend on how the rest of Europe's earnings season unfolds.
