A Courtroom Win, a $628 Target and a 32% AI Overlap: Berkshire's Three-Layer Story

A US bankruptcy judge on Wednesday approved a $535 million settlement between defunct talc supplier Whittaker, Clark & Daniels and National Indemnity, Berkshire Hathaway's insurance arm — turning aside objections that the deal was too small. Reuters reported the ruling, which closes a legal chapter at one subsidiary while leaving the wider investment case to be settled elsewhere.

The distinction matters. The approved figure is a legal resolution, not a signal about Berkshire's underlying earning power, and it should not be read as a charge against current group results. For shareholders, the courtroom outcome sits on a different shelf from the operating story.

That operating story got a nudge the day before. UBS analyst Brian Meredith lifted his price target on Thursday to $628 from $604, keeping a buy rating — a move that preceded the court approval and therefore cannot be read as a reaction to it.

Where the capital is going

Berkshire has also been putting money to work in private markets. Roughly two weeks ago it agreed to buy newly issued shares in Bending Spoons through a $330 million private placement; according to the company, Berkshire's stake would rise to 4% on completion.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Berkshire Hathaway?

Bending Spoons reappears in a separate analysis published today, and in a far less comfortable role. A portfolio breakdown attributes about 32% of Berkshire's equity holdings to Apple, Alphabet and Bending Spoons — a trio the analysis groups under the AI theme. Media reports put the total equity portfolio at roughly $364 billion. That classification is an analytical lens, not a risk metric Berkshire itself publishes, and a shared theme does not mean every holding carries the same exposure.

Alphabet illustrates the point. Berkshire more than tripled its stake in the first quarter of 2026, according to media reports, then added further shares worth about $17 billion in the following quarter. The payoff now hinges less on data-center spending than on the revenue and profit that spending generates — and Alphabet reports next week, alongside Microsoft and Amazon.

Safe haven, with strings

Berkshire has picked up a defensive reputation during the latest technology selloff. Barron's described a rotation out of tech and other AI-linked positions into consumer staples, real estate and utilities, with Berkshire among the beneficiaries. The shift reflects changing investor preferences as much as company-specific news.

Behind it sits mounting skepticism about the returns on heavy AI spending. Reuters reported that results from Meta and Lam Research triggered sharp losses in tech stocks on Tuesday. Berkshire is being treated as an alternative in that environment — but nothing in that positioning makes it independent of the economic consequences of the AI buildout.

Berkshire Hathaway at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

The defensive label describes how the stock behaves relative to harder-hit market segments. It does not answer what risks Berkshire carries through its holdings. Nor is the company a clean bet against artificial intelligence: it pairs a safe-haven image with a meaningful technology commitment, and the two are not contradictions.

The next broad read on operations arrives with third-quarter 2026 results, expected on November 7. Until then, Wednesday's approval stands as a clearly bounded legal step forward — not a yardstick for the whole business.
