ABB Ties Data-Center Efficiency Push to a Wider Power Play

ABB is mounting a two-front campaign to win more of the data-center buildout, pairing a Swiss energy-efficiency partnership with a Latin American sales push aimed at the electricity systems that feed AI computing.

The Swiss arm of the engineering group has teamed up with the Swiss Datacenter Efficiency Association (SDEA) to help operators curb energy use and, just as importantly, have those gains measured independently. The tie-up, reported by Netzwoche, will see the two parties stage joint events and publish content built around concrete use cases, with the emphasis on how facilities can improve efficiency and then have the results verified by a third party. It is a pairing of practical fixes with an outside audit of their effect.

The SDEA's certification framework has covered water consumption since May 2026, extending its scope beyond raw electricity use. That broader lens gives the joint awareness effort a fuller view of the resources a data center consumes, and it means the collaboration is not confined to technical measures but extends to proving they work.

Brazil Showcase Builds on Product and Partner Strategy

The efficiency drive sits alongside a more commercial play in Brazil, where ABB will present integrated electrification solutions at DCD Connect Brasil in SĂŁo Paulo on November 4 and 5. The appearance lands in a market adding capacity fast and carrying heavy investment plans. It is a sales engagement rather than a reported large order, but it signals where ABB intends to position the offerings it has recently unveiled: at the power supply layer of an infrastructure whose expansion is straining energy systems.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ABB?

ABB launched its Infinitus direct-current portfolio for AI data centers in September. That followed an October 2025 announcement of a global collaboration with NVIDIA on gigawatt-scale power solutions. The planned Brazil appearance thus extends an existing product and partnership strategy rather than opening a new front.

The scale of the business is already visible. By the company's own account, ABB technology is used in every fourth data center. Media reports put ABB's data-center revenue at around $3 billion, roughly 10% of group sales. For investors, the question is less about presence at a trade fair than about whether ABB can grow its existing market position with the new lineup — and the NVIDIA tie-up and the DC portfolio are the concrete footholds.

According to JLL, Brazil added 106 megawatts of data-center capacity in the first half of 2026, with a further 134 megawatts due to come online by year-end. Those expansion plans form the economic backdrop to ABB's SĂŁo Paulo appearance, though they are neither equivalent to orders at ABB nor a promise of future revenue.

Cost-of-Ownership Pitch Meets an Efficiency Contract

ABB is framing its electrification offerings around a broader argument: that companies should judge power supply by total operating cost and asset availability, with connected systems, digital monitoring and service partnerships moving to the fore. A new ABB report puts energy at 25.4% of industrial operating costs, while 59% of surveyed companies see rising energy costs as a major threat. Those findings cover industry as a whole and are not a specific forecast for data centers.

A concrete example of squeezing more from existing equipment came a day earlier, in a multi-year service contract with ACC covering the Jamul cement plant in Chhattisgarh. The deal spans drive overhauls, digital monitoring and energy audits, tying the refurbishment of installed machinery to continuous observation. In a first phase completed in April 2026, 25 ACS800 drives were overhauled on site without a major production stoppage, avoiding around 16 tonnes of CO?.

ACC is also using ABB Ability Digital Powertrain Insights to shift from reactive to predictive maintenance, so that servicing needs surface earlier instead of waiting for a fault. A second phase involving another 25 ACS800 modules is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. According to ABB, an overhaul cuts a drive's lifecycle emissions by 50–80% compared with a full replacement.

Both strands of news rest on the same logic of doing more with what is already there — through collaboration and independent assessment in data centers, through refurbishment and predictive servicing at the cement plant. ABB shares gained 2.1% on the day, though no clear price effect can be attributed to any single announcement.
