Airbus Faces Tight Year-End Delivery Sprint as A321neo Coating Defect Forces Rework on 500 Jets

Airbus faces a repair campaign on about 500 A321neo jets after a missing anti-corrosion primer; up to 20 September deliveries may slip.

A missing layer of anti-corrosion primer on fuselage components has handed Airbus an unwelcome logistical headache, pushing the manufacturer to accelerate inspections across roughly 500 aircraft from its A321neo family.

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency made clear on Friday that there is no immediate danger to ongoing flight operations. Even so, carriers and the planemaker are now working through a repair campaign that would normally have waited for the standard, far longer maintenance cycle.

Two-Year Window for Carriers

Airlines operating the affected jets have been given two years to inspect and rework the parts, according to Reuters. About half of the roughly 500 aircraft are already flying commercial routes worldwide, while the remainder sit at various stages of production. Airbus has not publicly confirmed that total figure.

Industry sources estimate a full workshop visit tied to the fix could tie up an aircraft for as long as nine days.

Italian Supplier at the Root of the Problem

The rework traces back to a faulty coating applied by TESI, a subcontractor to Italy's Leonardo located near Naples. Technicians from both companies are reviewing procedures on site to correct the manufacturing process.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Airbus?

Without the specific primer, the reinforcement struts in the forward lower fuselage section risk corrosion over time. The A321XLR variant is not believed to be affected, based on current understanding.

Delivery Plan Feels the Strain

The defect has already begun to bite into September output. Reuters, citing industry circles, reports that as many as 20 aircraft will slip into the fourth quarter — a period that is traditionally the busiest stretch in the aerospace production and handover calendar. Adding jets to those final three months intensifies the logistical pressure on the final assembly plants.

Management is still targeting around 870 commercial aircraft deliveries for the full year 2026, a figure laid out in the half-year report. By the end of August, the company had handed over 475 units, leaving a heavy workload for the closing third of the year.

Analysts see the repair work as one more sign of the sector's persistent struggles. Rob Morris pointed out that the supply chain remains far from under stable control, with extra inspection and rework steps soaking up capacity Airbus needs to hit its annual targets.

Infrastructure Push Continues

Even as the rework unfolds, Airbus is pressing ahead with investments to handle the long-term delivery volume. On September 15, the group opened a new integrated delivery centre for the A320 family in Toulouse, spanning 35,000 square metres with 16 handover positions for customer aircraft.

A day later, the ramp-up effort reached another milestone with the handover of an A320neo to China Eastern Airlines — the first jet to come off the newly built second final assembly line at the company's Tianjin site in China.

Buyback and Share Performance

Alongside its operational steps, Airbus is servicing commitments to its workforce. The group disclosed on Monday that it repurchased 975,000 of its own shares between September 21 and 25, with the stock earmarked for employee share ownership and share-based compensation programmes.

Investors have stayed cautious amid the operational drag. In today's session the Airbus share is trading lower at EUR 192.64, a decline of 0.9 percent. That leaves the stock below its 50-day average of EUR 203.20, after closing Monday at EUR 194.32 for a gain of 0.3 percent.
