Airbus shares hold near record highs as strong 2026 order book offsets investor concerns over the Air India A320 incident.

The market's verdict on Airbus has been remarkably steady of late, even as the company juggles two very different narratives: a blockbuster order pipeline that keeps thickening, and a mid-air incident that has drawn regulators into the cockpit of one of its best-selling jets.

Shares closed Monday at €213.60, a slip of just 0.21 percent, leaving the stock within 3.46 percent of its January peak of €221.25. Tuesday brought a further dip of 0.82 percent to €211.85, but the pullback looks modest against the backdrop of a 30-day annualized volatility reading of 42.73 percent. Investors, it seems, are treating the Air India episode as a sideshow rather than a reason to reassess the industrial story.

A Sudden Descent Over Thailand

The incident in question unfolded on August 4, when an A320 operated by Air India — registration VT-EXO — lost roughly 300 feet, or about 91 meters, during cruise altitude on a flight from Phuket to Delhi. The crew regained control and landed safely, but twelve people aboard sustained injuries: eight passengers and four crew members, out of a total of 137 passengers and eight crew on board.

Airbus has confirmed it is dispatching technical specialists to support the investigation, working alongside India's AAIB and France's BEA. The flight recorders have been secured and are being analyzed. A preliminary drug screening of the captain reportedly came back non-negative, prompting a confirmation test, and Indian media say both pilots have been suspended from duty pending the outcome. Investigators are weighing a range of possible triggers — a hydraulic fault, an autopilot disengagement, a stall warning — though nothing has been confirmed, and Airbus has not offered its own preliminary assessment.

For now, the market appears to share the view that this is an isolated event unless the probe uncovers a systemic flaw in the A320 platform. The stock's resilience suggests investors are keeping the investigation in the "watch and wait" column rather than the "sell" column.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Airbus?

The Order Book Tells a Bolder Story

The more consequential news flow has been on the commercial side. Early August brought word that net orders for 2026 had crossed the 1,000 mark for the first time, propelled by a July that added more than 200 new contracts. By the end of July, gross orders stood at 1,090, with 418 aircraft delivered — up from 373 at the same point last year.

July's delivery tally came to 67 aircraft handed over to 39 customers. The standout was SMBC Aviation Capital, which firmed up an order for 100 A320neo-family jets and then added 65 A321neo and 35 A320neo on top. Riyadh Air chipped in with six additional A350-1000s, and The Helicopter Company ordered eight more H145 rotorcraft. That breadth across product lines — narrowbody, widebody, and helicopters — is the kind of demand diversification that argues against the cyclicality worries that have long shadowed the sector.

Half-Year Numbers Back the Optimism

The order momentum might be dismissed as a future promise, but the first-half results, published July 29, give it a firmer footing. Airbus delivered 351 commercial aircraft in the period, up 15 percent from 306 a year earlier. Revenue climbed 12 percent to €33.176 billion, while adjusted EBIT jumped 24 percent to €2.727 billion — margin growth outpacing top-line growth, a dynamic that tends to please the market.

Management has stuck to its full-year target of roughly 870 deliveries, citing the engine supply agreements with Pratt & Whitney as the assurance that production planning is now on firmer ground. That guidance matters: the delivery number is the single most-watched metric for Airbus watchers, and the ability to hold it amid supply-chain turbulence is itself a signal.

Capital Returns and a Long-Range Ambition

The confidence extends beyond near-term guidance. On July 21, the company laid out a medium-term ambition of lifting adjusted EBIT to between €12 billion and €13 billion by 2029, and the board authorized a €5 billion share buyback program spread over three years. Returning capital to shareholders in the middle of a capital-intensive ramp-up is a statement of intent — a signal that management does not expect liquidity to become a constraint.

Where the Cautions Remain

The caveats are not hard to find. The A350F freighter is slated for its first flight later this year, but certification and first delivery are not expected until late 2027, with meaningful volumes only in 2028. That is a long runway, and a lot can go wrong in the interim.

Valuation also invites a degree of sobriety. With the stock trading just 4.25 percent below its 52-week high and volatility running hot, the easy money may already have been made. Kepler Cheuvreux upgraded the stock to "Buy" in mid-June, lifting its price target from €196 to €212 — a level the shares have already brushed against, raising the question of how much near-term upside remains.

The synthesis of the moment is this: the operational fundamentals — order books, delivery numbers, margin trajectory — are telling a coherent story of a company executing on its own ambitions. The Air India investigation is a cloud, but not yet a storm. The valuation near the year's high and the long timeline on the A350F argue for patience rather than alarm. The direction of travel, for now, remains upward.
