Aixtron's Order Boom Meets a Market That Won't Pay Up for It

Aixtron closed out the third quarter of 2026 with an order book that more than doubled year on year — and a share price that still got dragged through a broad technology selloff. That split screen is the whole story right now: the operating news is strong, but the valuation the market is willing to attach to it keeps shrinking.

The preliminary figures, released roughly a week ago, put order intake at about EUR 275 million for the quarter, against EUR 124.0 million a year earlier. Revenue came in at around EUR 184 million, with EBIT of roughly EUR 57 million — a margin of about 31%. According to the company, both order intake and operating profitability comfortably beat market expectations. Reuters pegged the analyst consensus for orders at EUR 214.6 million, meaning Aixtron cleared that bar by a wide margin.

Two Stories, One Stock

The demand is not abstract. Chief executive Felix Grawert traced the surge to equipment for laser applications used in AI data-center communications, and said it bolsters the business outlook for 2027. Reuters also identified optoelectronic applications — lasers and LEDs — as the demand drivers. That gives the order number a specific commercial anchor rather than a vague AI halo.

Yet the same day's trading told a different story. Reuters linked the selloff in German tech names to doubts about the durability of AI capital spending, following a round of corporate earnings, along with geopolitical risk. No Aixtron-specific trigger was cited. The distinction matters: skepticism about the broader investment cycle does not invalidate a single order announcement, and a strong order announcement does not settle every question about that cycle. Investors are not choosing between two opposite narratives — they are weighing how much credit to give the reported business versus the doubts surrounding its backdrop.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Aixtron?

One detail keeps the enthusiasm in check: Aixtron left its full-year 2026 guidance unchanged. A blowout preliminary quarter and a raised annual forecast are not the same thing, and anyone already pricing in a broader upgrade could be disappointed.

A Rating Upgrade With a Lower Target

The split between business momentum and valuation showed up plainly in MPCM's October 16 move. The research house upgraded Aixtron from "Hold" to "Buy" while simultaneously cutting its price target to EUR 42 from EUR 56. Analyst Malte Schaumann pointed to the strong order intake and improved planning visibility for 2027 — and to the sector multiple, which has come down since the summer.

An improved recommendation paired with a reduced target is no contradiction. It reflects a more positive view of the shares set against a lower valuation yardstick. Picking only the cheerier half of that call would be a risky way to read it.

What October 29 Has to Deliver

The next scheduled checkpoint is the quarterly statement on October 29, which will also cover results for the first nine months of 2026. The market will be watching less for a repeat of the headline numbers than for how management frames the link between the order surge, profitability and the road ahead.

If Aixtron can convincingly present the demand as the foundation for continued growth, the strong quarter reads as evidence of a durable recovery rather than a single good booking period. If skepticism about the staying power of that demand gains the upper hand, a good chunk of the bull case weakens — and a further compression in sector valuations could weigh on the stock even without any fresh bad news from the company.
