The gap between what Alibaba's share price says and what its earnings reports show has rarely been wider. Since announcing a $10.2 billion equity placement on August 23, the stock has shed 5 percent, extending a slide that has left shares trading roughly 41 percent below their October peak of $164.20 — a decline that looks alarming until you examine what the company is actually doing with the money.

At the center of the debate is a fundamental disagreement among analysts about how to read the capital increase. Bernstein SocGen lowered its price target on the stock from $180 to $165 on Monday while maintaining an Outperform rating. Analyst Robin Zhu framed the market's reaction as "investor grumbling," acknowledging that dilution concerns are understandable but arguing they miss the bigger picture: the proceeds are earmarked for AI chip development, including the Zhenwu 810E and M890 processors, with Bernstein estimating payback periods of roughly three and 2.5 years respectively.

The stock slipped 0.9 percent in Monday trading to €96.70, following Friday's close of €97.60. Over the past 30 days, the decline totals 13 percent, suggesting the capital raise is compounding rather than causing the recent weakness. The 50-day moving average now sits at €101.25, leaving the current price about 4.4 percent below that benchmark.

The Bull Case Rests on Cloud Momentum

Goldman Sachs has taken the opposite tack, adding Alibaba to its "Buy the Dip" list alongside names like Ulta Beauty and Viking Holdings. The bank projects earnings per share growth of 64 percent and 33 percent for fiscal years 2027 and 2028, driven primarily by the cloud division's accelerating performance.

Those numbers find support in the June quarter results. Revenue climbed 9 percent to 268.95 billion yuan, while the AI-focused cloud segment surged 45 percent to 48.44 billion yuan. Adjusted EBITA in that division jumped 133 percent to 5.63 billion yuan. Notably, AI-related revenue has now grown by more than 100 percent for twelve consecutive quarters — a streak that underpins Goldman's confidence.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Alibaba?

Zhu also points to Alibaba's balance sheet strength, noting a net cash position of $30.7 billion. That cushion suggests the capital raise is strategically motivated rather than born of necessity, even if it spooks some shareholders in the near term.

A Broader Investment Wave

Alibaba is hardly alone in opening its wallet for AI infrastructure. Together with Tencent and Baidu, China's tech giants boosted second-quarter capital expenditures by 105 percent to $19 billion, with a substantial portion flowing to AI chips. The government's recent loosening of access to more powerful Nvidia processors adds another tailwind.

The consumer side of the business is expanding too. AI developers including Moonshot and Z.ai now sell subscriptions through Tmall, while Alibaba Cloud supports the new "AI Space Station" platform. Travel subsidiary Fliggy reports booming outbound tourism demand — a smaller segment, but evidence of the conglomerate's operational breadth.

Where Analysts Land

Bank of America raised its price target to $175 from $172 with a Buy rating, citing Alibaba's full-stack AI cloud strategy and clear financial targets for cash payback and free cash flow. Susquehanna sees fair value at $190. The consensus sits at Strong Buy, with twelve buy recommendations and an average price target of $189.46 — implying roughly 67 percent upside from current US-dollar levels.

Jefferies, in a note primarily about Chinese AI provider Zhipu, explicitly named Alibaba and ByteDance as preferred picks over smaller AI specialists whose monetization prospects look shakier.

The tension is plain: short-term dilution anxiety is depressing the share price while the operating numbers tell a story of accelerating, profitable growth in precisely the areas the new capital will fund. Whether the market's skepticism fades as the investment cycle matures — or whether the dilution proves more punishing than the optimists expect — will likely determine whether Alibaba's stock closes the gap to those price targets or continues to frustrate holders.
