Almonty: A Lower Price Target, a Soft Chinese Market, and the Gap Between a Plan and a Shipment

Two benchmarks, one stock

On Thursday, Oppenheimer analyst Ian Zaffino cut his price target on Almonty from US$25 to US$19 while keeping his "Outperform" rating. The move splits two questions that are easy to blur: how the analyst views the company, and what he thinks the shares are worth. Reading only the confirmed rating misses the cut; reading only the cut misses that the positive stance survived it.

The rationale was twofold. Oppenheimer pointed to lower valuation multiples among comparable companies, and to tungsten/APT prices that have softened to US$2,700 per MTU. Almonty's valuation, on this reading, rests on more than its own progress — the price environment and how peers are valued carry weight too.

DA Davidson took the other side of the ledger. On October 12, following talks with company representatives, it reaffirmed its buy recommendation and its US$33.00 price target, while revising its revenue estimates and adjusted EBITDA expectations. Two houses, two yardsticks, and a spread of US$14 between them.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?

What the metal is doing

The backdrop is a Chinese tungsten market that media reports described on Friday as marked by weak seasonal demand from downstream industries and thinner trading activity. Almonty shares slipped 2.7% on the day, putting the move in a soft sector context — though no direct link between the industry weakness and the share decline has been established.

That distinction matters. Weaker commodity prices can dampen expectations for a company; progress on its projects answers a different question, namely whether the planned operational steps are advancing. At Almonty the two levels sit side by side.

Sangdong as the operational test

CEO Lewis Black's newsletter of October 11 addressed the first commercial tungsten shipment from Sangdong in more than three decades, alongside progress in Rwanda and plans for a second expansion phase. The distinction between planning and execution is essential here: Black spoke of a planned delivery, and no completed shipment can be inferred from it. For investors, the operational test lies in carrying out the announced steps, not in announcing them.

Those items also describe different stages of development. A delivery that has taken place is not the same thing as an expansion plan, and the two should not be fused into a single promise of success. The value of such disclosures lies precisely in separating the achieved from the intended.

Almonty at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Today's investor day

An investor day announced roughly a week ago is scheduled for today, billed as an overview of the tungsten market and price trends together with operational information on the individual mines. Pairing market prices with mine development in one setting makes sense. The event is, for now, an announced information occasion rather than a reported new operating result.

The takeaway for investors is less about the number of positive headlines than about how convincingly operational progress and the economic environment fit together. A weaker industry report does not substitute for an assessment of the projects' actual advance, and an expansion plan does not cancel out a softer price backdrop. The latest analyst action underlines the same split: progress can hold while the yardstick used to value it comes down.
