The tungsten producer's latest capital return initiative arrives with unusual timing — not as a defensive gesture, but as a statement of intent from a company that has just completed its transformation from mine builder to commercial operator.

Almonty Industries launched its share repurchase program on Monday, authorizing the buyback of up to 14.4 million shares — roughly five percent of outstanding stock as of August 14 — over a 36-month window. The program carries a ceiling of $300 million, funded from a balance sheet that has rarely looked stronger.

That financial firepower comes courtesy of a June convertible bond placement that raised $800 million, an offering that was oversubscribed and helped push the company's cash position to $1.23 billion by June 30. The proceeds also enabled Almonty to fully repay its KfW loan more than a month ago, removing a longstanding liability from the books.

Analyst Sentiment Splits as Production Ramp Accelerates

The buyback has drawn a mixed response from the analyst community. GBC AG reaffirmed its buy recommendation on Thursday with a price target of $30.00 through end-2027, pointing to the Sangdong mine's operational transition — the facility in South Korea's Gangwon province has been processing stockpiled ore since July 2026. Diamond Equity struck a more cautious tone, trimming near-term earnings estimates on August 14 while explicitly maintaining a positive long-term view.

The divergence reflects a broader tension in the stock's recent trajectory. Despite the torrent of positive operational news, shares have shed roughly 21.3 percent since the convertible bond placement — a disconnect between the fundamental narrative and market performance that has not gone unnoticed.

Q2 Numbers Tell a Story of Explosive Growth

The financial results underpinning much of the optimism are difficult to overstate. Second-quarter revenue came in at C$43.0 million, a 498 percent surge from the C$7.2 million reported a year earlier. The European APT average price — the benchmark for tungsten — climbed to $3,075 per MTU from $453 per MTU in the prior-year quarter, capturing the historic run-up in the metal's price.

Net income swung to C$181.8 million from a loss of C$58.2 million in the comparable period, though a substantial portion — C$173.1 million — stemmed from non-cash gains on derivative revaluations. Adjusted EBITDA reached $17.6 million, providing a cleaner view of underlying operational performance.

Institutional Interest Builds Ahead of Index Inclusion

The operational momentum has not gone unnoticed among larger investors. Bank of America expanded its stake by 309.6 percent during the first quarter of 2026, now holding 908,911 shares. Cooper Creek Partners Management and Encompass Capital Advisors also added meaningfully to their positions, increasing holdings by 110.4 percent and 47.9 percent respectively.

The timing of those accumulations is notable. Almonty secured inclusion in the Russell 1000 and Russell 3000 indices at the end of June, a development that typically drives passive inflows and broadens institutional visibility.

A 21-Year Commitment and a Streamlined Listing Structure

The company has also been cementing its commercial foundation. Mid-July brought an extension of the supply agreement with Global Tungsten & Powders LLC, stretching the contract to 21 years, lifting Phase I contracted volumes by 40 percent, and improving pricing terms by roughly 6.3 percent. The long-dated nature of the agreement underscores Almonty's position as a reliable supplier in a market increasingly focused on supply chain security.

That theme is being reinforced by policy shifts. The U.S. Department of Commerce announced Thursday a one-year export ban on tungsten-bearing scrap and "black mass" from lithium-ion batteries, effective August 27 — a measure aimed at strengthening domestic critical mineral supply chains and one that structurally favors producers outside China.

Almonty is simultaneously consolidating its market presence. Shares were delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange on July 31, and approval has been granted for withdrawal from the Australian Securities Exchange effective September 1, with trading of CHESS Depositary Interests ending the same day. The company is concentrating liquidity on the Nasdaq, where its primary listing now resides — a move that should ease access for U.S. institutional investors and deepen trading depth.
