Almonty's Sangdong Ramp-Up: A Booked Cargo, a 21,000-Tonne Gap, and the Work Still Ahead

Almonty has moved past the starting line at Sangdong. What matters now is whether the operation can turn an announced shipment into a completed one — and whether a widening global tungsten shortfall translates into delivered tonnes rather than a compelling narrative.
The Supply Gap That Frames the Story
S&P Global estimated on Wednesday that tungsten mines outside China would supply roughly 22,000 tonnes of contained tungsten trioxide in 2026. Measured against demand in those same markets, that leaves an estimated shortfall of 21,000 tonnes. The figure is a projection, not a settled annual tally — but it explains why Sangdong's restart carries weight well beyond Almonty's own balance sheet. S&P Global named the project explicitly as a supply-chain development, placing the company inside a broader picture: new non-Chinese output arriving into a market whose expected supply does not cover expected demand.
That scarcity describes what the market needs. It says nothing about how quickly any single producer can meet it. For Almonty, the operative question is not whether tungsten is tight, but whether Sangdong can convert a running plant into dependable deliveries.
A Date on the Calendar
CEO Lewis Black said Wednesday at the International Investment Forum that the first concentrate shipment is booked for October 24. The date gives investors a fixed reference point. A booking, though, is not a completed delivery — and the distinction matters more than any single day's share price move.
Almonty's shareholder letter of September 29 provides the backdrop: Phase I at Sangdong is producing, while Phase II development continues. The two phases sit at different stages — output on one side, ongoing build-out on the other. Keeping them separate is essential, because running operations and future expansion are not the same kind of progress.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Almonty?
The first concentrate production roughly two weeks ago marked the starting point. At that time, Almonty said the initial bags of tungsten concentrate were ready for export. The booked vessel gives the next step a deadline. Export-ready material and a completed sailing remain different milestones.
The Mill Is Running — Not Yet at Full Tilt
According to the September 29 letter, the mill was operating 13 hours a day, seven days a week, with plans to extend toward continuous operation. Black's Wednesday remarks confirm that the ramp-up is underway, not that it is finished. Management also reported ongoing optimization work at the plant — production is live, but its processes are still being refined.
That gap between a producing facility and a target steady-state is precisely where the work lies. Company disclosures point in a clear direction; they do not justify treating the planned operating level as already achieved.
Phase II runs in parallel. Almonty said Wednesday it expects equipment orders tied to that phase within four to six weeks. The shareholder letter had pointed to completion of the phase in 2027. Near-term execution and longer-horizon expansion therefore sit side by side: expected orders are a checkpoint, not placed contracts, and the projected completion remains a plan rather than a finished build.
What the Next Proof Point Looks Like
The stock added 2.7% on Friday, consistent with a friendlier trading session. It does not answer the operational question of how the Sangdong ramp-up is progressing. A booked shipping date is more informative than a single upbeat market day because it makes the operational trajectory verifiable.
Almonty has laid out concrete next steps: the booked shipment, plant optimization, and anticipated equipment orders. That is more tangible than a general growth story. The convincing evidence would be their execution. October 24 therefore deserves more attention than the recent daily move in the shares. The company's operational advances argue for genuine progress at Sangdong — but pricing in the success of the entire ramp-up would get ahead of the results Almonty has yet to announce.
