AMD Weighs Intel's 14A Node as AI Demand Reshapes Its Roadmap

AMD is reportedly among the chipmakers evaluating Intel's 14A manufacturing process, a move that would give the company a second source of leading-edge capacity as demand for AI compute continues to climb. Piper Sandler flagged AMD's interest on Thursday, though neither side has committed to any production agreement.
The disclosure lands at a moment when the industry's supply chain is under strain from trade politics as much as from technology. AMD's chief executive has stressed the need for stability across the entire technology ecosystem, comments made as the Trump–Xi summit played out and US–China tensions over technology persisted. For a company whose high-performance data center processors are built through deeply interconnected global supply chains, those frictions carry real weight: political disruption or export restrictions can snarl logistics, while the breakneck pace of AI development demands steady planning certainty across research, development and manufacturing.
Wall Street Lifts Its Target
Analyst Vivek Arya of Bank of America Securities named AMD his top pick in the CPU space on Thursday, keeping a Buy rating and raising the price target from $620 to $720. His team expects substantial market expansion in server processors over the coming years — a view echoed by other industry experts, who point to accelerating demand for AI compute and AMD's strong position in both server CPUs and graphics processors.
The bull case rests on two pillars. Global investment in server and AI infrastructure keeps filling order books, while the company's fortunes remain tied to whether international technology exchange holds steady despite diplomatic conflict. Markets appear to be betting that demand for modern server architecture outweighs geopolitical hurdles. Major data center operators continue to commit significant capital to expanding compute capacity, and advanced semiconductor components remain indispensable for training and running complex AI workloads.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMD?
Agentic AI Pulls EPYC Into the Spotlight
That demand is increasingly driven by more intricate AI architectures. AMD detailed on September 18 how its EPYC processors can handle core tasks within workflows for AI agents. Three days earlier, on September 14, the company's Silo AI unit struck a partnership with F-Secure to study how agent-based processes route across local environments and cloud infrastructure.
AMD is extending its ecosystem at the device level as well. On Thursday it announced that Perplexity subscribers can use the Portable Computer application on Windows machines, provided they run Ryzen AI Max processors or the Ryzen AI Halo developer platform.
Robotics, Security and an Unconfirmed Price Move
Beyond conventional computing, the company is laying groundwork for new territory. AMD said Monday it will present physical AI and robotics solutions at the ROSCon 2026 conference, showcasing compute hardware and open software for training, simulating and deploying robotic systems.
Management is also tending to the stability of existing products. On Thursday AMD published security advisories covering vulnerabilities in Zynq UltraScale+ devices, Versal SoCs and the Compressonator developer package. Separately, media reports on September 18 circulated speculation about a 10% price adjustment across product lines — a claim AMD did not confirm.
A Stock Within Striking Distance of Its High
The shares have held firm through it all. AMD closed Friday at EUR 554.30, putting it 2.2% below its 52-week high of EUR 566.50. Reuters attributed the resilience to the recent record run on the Nasdaq and broad interest in AI semiconductors. Earlier, the hype surrounding AI agents had swept through the chip sector and briefly pushed the company's valuation past the $1 trillion mark.
