A stake disclosure, a downgraded earnings outlook and a sharp drop in Chinese lithium prices all landed within days of each other at AMG Critical Materials — but they tell very different stories about the company.

BlackRock's filing, published on Tuesday and covering a transaction executed the previous day, revealed a 3.30% capital interest and 3.71% of voting rights in the Frankfurt-listed specialty metals group. Media reports indicate the position comprises both ordinary shares and potential exposure via contracts for difference, a distinction that matters: the notice describes ownership structure, not a straightforward share purchase, and it offers no read on BlackRock's view of AMG's sales, raw-material costs or future earnings.

On the operating side, Citi set a more cautious tone the same day. Analyst Ephrem Ravi cut his price target to EUR 50 from EUR 52 while keeping a Buy rating — a trimming of expectations rather than a retreat from the recommendation. The bank also lowered its EBITDA estimates for 2026 through 2028, citing weaker assumed commodity prices.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying AMG?

That revision connects directly to the turmoil in the lithium complex. Chinese lithium carbonate futures fell 11.8% to 104,740 yuan per tonne, according to Reuters, as an agreement between the EU and China to limit Chinese hybrid vehicle exports into Europe stoked demand concerns for battery materials. Worries about next year's consumption and speculation over a possible restart of CATL's Jianxiawo mine added to the pressure. The selloff was a sector-wide event, not a company-specific announcement from AMG, and it provides market context for Citi's more conservative assumptions without confirming anything about AMG's actual reported results.

Brussels Backing Sits on a Different Timeline

Roughly a week earlier, AMG said the European Commission had designated its Bitterfeld lithium refinery and the Zinnwald Lithium project as strategic projects under the Critical Raw Materials Act. The classification underscores the projects' strategic weight, yet it is not an earnings forecast and says nothing about their eventual contribution to the bottom line.

For investors, three distinct signals therefore sit side by side: institutional ownership, political recognition of projects, and downgraded operating expectations. Near-term assessment hinges above all on commodity price assumptions — and the next hard data point on the business trajectory is the quarterly report scheduled for 4 November 2026.
