The optics sector has a new bottleneck story on its hands, and Applied Optoelectronics sits squarely at the center of it. The Texas-based networking specialist finds itself in the unusual position of having more orders than it can physically manufacture — a constraint management says could persist well into 2027 even as it moves to triple monthly output.

Shares climbed 13% to €128.54 in Wednesday trading following the company's second-quarter report, leaving the stock roughly 11% above its 50-day moving average of €115.29. The move extends a remarkable run that has seen the equity gain 260% since the start of the year and trade about 602% above its 52-week low.

Record Revenue and a Return to Profitability

Applied Optoelectronics posted record revenue of $191.9 million for the second quarter of 2026, a year-over-year increase of 86%. More significantly for investors, the company swung back to profitability on a non-GAAP basis, reporting net income of $5.5 million, or $0.06 per share — triple the $0.02 consensus estimate analysts had penciled in.

The turnaround is being driven almost entirely by the 800G transceiver product line, which doubled its quarter-over-quarter revenue to $12.8 million. Management expects shipment volumes for these high-speed components to nearly quintuple in the current quarter, with revenue guidance set between $255 million and $290 million.

That optimism is backed by a backlog that already exceeds available manufacturing capacity. The company aims to reach monthly production of 650,000 units for its 800G and 1.6T products by year-end, but internal projections suggest demand will outstrip supply capabilities for some time yet.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Applied Optoelectronics?

Wall Street Updates Its Scorecard

The strong operational results prompted a flurry of analyst revisions on Tuesday. Raymond James lifted its price target from $151 to $178 while maintaining an "Outperform" rating, arguing that a successful volume ramp of the 1.6T technology in the fourth quarter could close the gap with industry leaders within a year.

Rosenblatt Securities reaffirmed its buy recommendation with a more aggressive $220 target, citing a favorable geopolitical environment and persistent undersupply across optical component markets. The consensus rating stands at "Buy" with an average price target of $143 — though the dispersion is striking. The most bullish forecasts reach as high as $220, while the most cautious sit at just $41.

The sector itself provided additional tailwinds on Wednesday, as strong results from peer Lumentum Holdings sparked a broader rally across optical networking stocks.

Institutional Moves and Insider Activity

The Jane Street Group disclosed on Monday that it had built a 2.4% stake in the company, representing roughly two million shares. The filing added to the positive sentiment surrounding the stock.

Not all activity has been accumulation, however. CFO Stefan J. Murry sold 4,000 shares on Monday, though the transaction was executed under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan and is widely viewed as routine portfolio management rather than a signal about the company's prospects.

The stock remains below its May 52-week high despite the recent surge, but the recovery from last November's trough has been dramatic. The key question now is whether management can execute on its ambitious production targets for the next technology generation — and whether the capacity expansion arrives before competitors close the gap in high-speed optical components.
