ASML's Friday Swoon Traces Back to Amazon and Intel, Not Its Own Books
Published on 11/02/2026 at 13:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deASML Holding shares came under pressure on Friday as doubts about the payback on artificial intelligence spending rippled through the technology sector. The decline was part of a broader selloff in tech stocks, according to media reports, and was not triggered by any fresh company-specific announcement from the Dutch chip-equipment maker.
The distinction matters for investors. What the market questioned was the economics of the AI investment boom — not ASML's own operating performance. The company had recently reported strong quarterly figures and additional share buybacks.
AI Spending Under Scrutiny
The ASML ADR fell 6.55% on Friday, according to media reports, while the stock's daily move was logged at -5.0% as it was swept up in a weak European technology environment. Reuters reported that pressure came from Intel's weak revenue outlook for the closing quarter and from concerns about the costs and returns of AI infrastructure investments. At Amazon, the focus was on more than $42 billion in AI-driven cash outflows over the trailing twelve months.
The skepticism was therefore not aimed at the technical development of artificial intelligence itself. The central question was how the hefty outlays would pay off economically. As a supplier of semiconductor equipment, ASML was caught in that sector-wide selling pressure. The share-price reaction should not be equated with a new profit warning from the company.
The Operating Record as a Counterweight
For the third quarter of 2026, ASML reported revenue of EUR 11.7 billion on October 14. Gross margin reached 57.5%, and net profit came in at EUR 5.0 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
Those results offer a different reference point from the industry-wide nervousness. They describe business already booked, whereas the recent market worries target the future returns on AI spending. Both can hold true at once: strong results from an equipment supplier and mounting doubts about the profitability of investments in its customers' industry.
Just over three weeks ago, ASML guided for fourth-quarter 2026 revenue of between EUR 14.2 billion and EUR 15.2 billion. That remains a forecast, not revenue already earned. For the full year 2026, the company projected sales of between EUR 44 billion and EUR 45 billion — the company-side benchmark against which further developments should be measured.
Buybacks and a Dividend Add Another Layer
Alongside the operating outlook stands the return of capital to shareholders. On October 26, ASML reported repurchases under its ongoing program. For the period from October 19 to 23, the company disclosed share buybacks totaling EUR 499,270,777 — executed purchases, not merely an announced authorization.
A payout is also on the calendar. An interim dividend for 2026 of EUR 1.88 per ordinary share has been announced for November 4, complementing the buybacks as a capital return to shareholders. It does not, however, answer the questions Reuters described about the profitability of AI investments.
Keeping the Layers Apart
To put the pullback in perspective, the different levels need to be separated. The buybacks are completed transactions, the quarterly figures are reported results, and the revenue outlook is an expectation. The recent selling pressure, by contrast, stemmed mainly from doubts about the economic benefit of the AI investment boom — not from any new negative corporate disclosure from ASML.
What investors are left with is a two-part picture: a company reporting profits and returning capital, and a stock exposed to shifting expectations for the technology sector around it.
