ASML's Order Book Stretches to 2030, but Its Factory Floors Set the Pace

ASML shares fell Thursday despite Q3 net sales of EUR 11.7 billion and raised 2026 guidance, as delivery capacity lags customer demand into 2027-2028.

ASML has spent the past week demonstrating that it can generate cash and return it — and, at the same time, that it cannot build machines fast enough to satisfy everyone who wants one. Those two stories collided on Thursday, when the Dutch lithography giant's stock fell despite a quarter that would flatter almost any industrial company.

The buyback disclosure came first in the calendar but matters least to the investment case. ASML reported repurchasing 233,867 of its own shares last week for a total of EUR 352,032,719. The transactions are settled fact, not an intention. They sit alongside a second interim dividend for 2026 of EUR 1.88 per ordinary share, declared roughly a week ago and payable on 4 November 2026. Investors should keep the two separate: buying back stock is not an extra payout to every holder, and neither the transaction total nor the dividend implies any further buyback or distribution decision.

A quarter that cleared the bar and still disappointed

The operating backdrop comes from results published about a week ago. For the third quarter of 2026, ASML posted net sales of EUR 11.7 billion and net profit of EUR 5.0 billion, with a gross margin of 57.5%. It also nudged up the floor of its 2026 revenue guidance, now seen at EUR 44–45 billion — a refinement of the lower end of the range rather than a blanket lift of every forecast line.

For the fourth quarter of 2026, management projects sales of EUR 14.2–15.2 billion. That is an outlook, not booked revenue.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Yet the shares headed south on Thursday. According to Reuters, a slight miss against the revenue consensus, constrained delivery capacity and a broader selloff in technology stocks all weighed, and the raised annual forecast was not enough to sustain further gains. Profit-taking after the release was among the explanations Reuters cited. The point for investors is that the negative market reaction does not mean the underlying business was weak — it ran into an already elevated bar.

Demand is not the same thing as revenue

The more consequential disclosure concerns the gap between what customers want and what ASML can ship. By the company's own account, planned supply is likely to fall short of customer demand in both 2027 and 2028. ASML is therefore examining ways to expand capacity beyond the 30% increase it has already communicated. That review is not a confirmation that the extra capacity will be built.

Reuters reported on 14 October that some customers were already discussing orders for 2029 and 2030, which underlines the long planning horizon. Such talks are neither firmly booked orders nor secured revenue.

So the bottleneck sits not in customer interest but in its conversion into delivered tools. Additional demand improves the longer-term picture; while shipping capacity stays limited, it cannot be fully translated into near-term sales. A higher revenue forecast on its own does not clear that constraint.

JPMorgan trims its target, keeps its rating

Analysts responded with nuance rather than a change of heart. Sandeep Deshpande of JPMorgan cut his price target on Thursday to $2,350 from $2,400 while maintaining an overweight rating. A lower target paired with an unchanged recommendation fits the tension between business prospects and valuation — not a retreat from ASML, but a modest pullback from the price expectation previously assigned to it.

What ultimately determines the economic payoff is how much additional capacity ASML can actually bring online and how quickly it can work through customer orders. Demand provides the foundation for further growth. Delivery decides how much of it reaches the top line.
