ASML's Record Quarter Collides With a Washington Warning

ASML closed its third quarter of 2026 with a record €11.7 billion in revenue and a €5.0 billion net profit — and, on the same day, a public warning from its finance chief that proposed US export rules could backfire on the very technology lead those rules are meant to protect.

Roger Dassen's objection, reported by Reuters, targets the so-called Match Act and its proposed restrictions on selling DUV systems to China. His argument is not that Chinese competitors have already caught up. It is that the curbs, if enacted, could speed up the development of rival Chinese technology. That distinction matters: the company is flagging a possible strategic risk, not describing a shift in the competitive landscape that has already happened. Just as relevant is where the proposal stands — it remains a proposal, making Dassen's remarks a stance against a policy in the pipeline rather than a response to restrictions already in force.

Two Clocks Running at Once

The political fight is unfolding against a backdrop of unusual earning power. Gross margin for the quarter came in at 57.5%, and management guided fourth-quarter revenue to a range of €14.2 billion to €15.2 billion. Those figures describe business already booked; Dassen's critique looks further out, at how policy could reshape the ground ASML competes on. A strong quarter does not, on its own, answer that concern.

The horizon stretches further still. According to Reuters, ASML said on Wednesday that it is in customer discussions about tool orders for 2029 and 2030, conversations it attributes to demand driven by artificial intelligence. So two very different signals sit side by side: order talks reaching years into the future, and unease about competition that policy could accelerate. Neither demand nor the latest results, taken alone, settles the investment case — Dassen's warning concerns the conditions under which ASML will have to defend its technological position.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Where the Analysts Landed

Equity research desks spent Thursday recalibrating, and the headline number — a cluster of lower price targets — tells less than it seems. JPMorgan trimmed its target to $2,350 from $2,400 while keeping its Overweight rating. Citi went the other way, lifting its target to €2,300 from €2,200 and reaffirming its buy call. At least one other house also cut its target without touching its positive rating.

The pattern is worth spelling out for anyone skimming the tape: a target and a rating do different jobs. The target expresses an expected valuation; the unchanged recommendation signals that no more skeptical view of the stock followed. Nor do the moves point in a single direction — and because the targets are quoted in different currencies, they should not be lined up side by side for a quick comparison.

A Payout With a Date on It

Alongside the results, ASML declared an interim dividend for 2026 of €1.88 per ordinary share, payable on 4 November 2026. That gives shareholders something the revised targets cannot: a fixed date and a fixed amount.

ASML Holding at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For investors, the useful line runs between three things that are easy to blur — reported performance, declared distributions, and expected valuation. The recent analyst activity touches mainly the last of these, and the positive recommendations have stayed in place throughout.
