ASML's Record Quarter Meets a Capacity Ceiling — and a Buyback That Isn't a Catalyst
Published on 10/27/2026 at 18:51 | Editorial boerse-global.deASML shares advanced 3.0% on Wednesday, riding a broader wave of enthusiasm across the semiconductor sector rather than any fresh operational disclosure from the Dutch lithography giant. The spark came a day earlier, when Anthropic publicly filed its stock exchange application — a move that media reports say sharpened investor appetite for AI-linked equities and lifted chip names across the board, ASML included.
That rally deserves context. It reflects sector sentiment, not a new order or a change in business conditions.
What ASML Actually Reported
The concrete company news is more mundane: ASML disclosed on Tuesday that it repurchased 343,310 of its own shares over the prior week, spending EUR 499,270,777 in the process. The transaction is part of an existing buyback program and documents executed trades — it offers no reliable explanation for the day's share price gain, and it should not be conflated with new customer demand or a shift in business momentum.
For a fundamental read, investors have to look back roughly two weeks, to results published on October 14. The third quarter of 2026 delivered a record: net sales of EUR 11.7 billion, a gross margin of 57.5%, and net profit of EUR 5.0 billion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?
The Number That Matters More Than the Headline
Management's guidance for the current quarter points to sales of EUR 14.2 billion to EUR 15.2 billion — a step up that puts the focus squarely on execution in the closing three months of the year. Strong demand sets the stage; it does not substitute for building and shipping the machines.
For the full year 2026, ASML projects revenue of EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion at a gross margin of around 56%. That range was raised roughly two weeks ago and remains a forecast, not a reported annual result.
Demand Outruns the Production Line
Beyond the current year, the company has drawn a clear line: planned delivery capacity for 2027 and 2028 will not fully cover customer demand. ASML is therefore examining additional capacity for the second of those two years. The review is a signal of potential, not a confirmation of expansion — whether and when extra revenue materializes depends on what capacity actually becomes available.
The same distinction between talk and contracts applies on the customer side. In the Vietnam project discussed about a week ago, Reuters reported that no supply agreement existed between ASML and Viettel; the discussions concerned a DUV lithography machine. According to Reuters sources, the planned fab is likely to miss its 2027 target for test production.
None of this undercuts the record quarter. It does, however, cap the weight that individual project reports should carry. Profitability already achieved, the revenue forecast, and secured delivery capacity are the sturdier yardsticks — firmer ground than sales conversations that have yet to close. Sentiment around AI may move the stock day to day; the guidance and the order book will decide where it settles.
