ASML's Record Quarter Meets Two Very Different Verdicts

ASML posted Q3 2026 revenue of EUR 11.7B and EUR 4.96B net profit, yet shares fell 1.3% amid a global tech selloff on hot U.S. inflation data.

ASML just turned in the strongest set of numbers in its history, and the market responded by marking the stock down. That disconnect is the real story. A day after the Dutch lithography giant reported third-quarter 2026 revenue of EUR 11.7 billion and a net profit of EUR 4.96 billion, the shares were trading 1.3% lower — and the wider tech tape was even weaker, with ASML caught up in a global selloff that pushed it down as much as 3.6% at one point.

The pressure came from outside the company. Unexpectedly hot U.S. inflation data revived fears of further rate hikes, and semiconductor names around the world bore the brunt. Nothing in ASML's own results explains the drop. What the day does illustrate is that a strong quarter and a strong share price are two separate things.

A profit headline with a footnote

The EUR 4.96 billion bottom line deserves a closer look. Roughly EUR 500 million of it came from a valuation gain on ASML's stake in Mistral AI — a real contribution, but not one generated by selling or servicing lithography systems. That doesn't diminish the operating performance, yet it does change how the headline should be read. For a company whose valuation leans heavily on future earnings, the gap between running the business and revaluing an investment matters.

Gross margin landed at 57.5% for the quarter, and management expects around 56% for the full year. For 2026 as a whole, ASML now guides to revenue of EUR 44 billion to EUR 45 billion. The raised floor on that range is a more tangible marker of progress than any expression of interest in delivery slots years away.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying ASML Holding?

Demand signals stretch to 2029 — but they aren't orders

Citi reads the quarter as evidence of AI-driven chip demand that is both stronger and more durable than investors had assumed. Customers, the bank notes, are already discussing capacity needs for 2029 and 2030, which Citi views as extended visibility that could justify adding production capacity. Accelerating memory demand, brisk upgrade activity and favorable margin prospects round out the bullish case — a reminder that the installed base, not just new tool sales, feeds the earnings outlook.

Reuters, however, reported that ASML is not yet taking orders for those later delivery years. That distinction sits at the heart of any valuation: a longer planning horizon improves the growth picture without removing execution risk. Management has said its planned capacity increases of 30% in both 2027 and 2028 will not be enough to meet demand. The bottleneck cuts both ways — it underscores how strong the appetite is while capping how quickly that appetite can be converted into revenue.

Two analysts, one set of facts

Jefferies offered a more cautious read. Analyst Janardan Menon cut his price target to EUR 1,590 and kept a hold rating, pointing to robust gross margins through 2027 while calling the trends for 2028 less certain. The contrast with Citi is instructive: both camps can accept the same strong present and still arrive at different conclusions, because the disagreement is really about how much faith to place in profits that sit further out. Greater visibility has value; it is not the same as certainty.

What ties the day together is a shift in the debate. The question is no longer whether the AI buildout generates demand — the quarterly figures and customer conversations answer that convincingly. The harder test is how reliably ASML converts that demand into shippable tools and recurring revenue. That, rather than the distance to the next requested delivery year, is what the valuation ought to be measured against.
